Entry-Level JobVerifiedNo experience needed

Job Description

About SMH Academy SMH Academy is a residential mental health program serving young adults ages 18-26. The program uses a whole-person model of care — addressing environment, nutrition, exercise, sleep, hygiene, community, and talk therapy alongside medication management when clinically indicated. Behavioral support is built on an earned-incentive framework rather than punitive discipline, and all programming is neurodiversity-affirming. Position Overview The Residential Counselor is a direct-support, mentorship-style role — not a clinical position. No degree or prior mental health experience is required, but it is preferred. Comprehensive paid training is provided, including instruction in neurodiversity-affirming care, the program's behavioral framework, and de-escalation techniques. Residential Counselors work on-site with residents day to day, helping them stay on schedule, stay positive, and build the practical skills needed for independent living. A licensed therapist is on-site three days per week; Residential Counselors coordinate with the clinical team but do not provide therapy themselves. What You'll Do Hold the schedule: Help residents follow the house's daily schedule, including meals, activities, and structured routines.
Guide and redirect:
Model a positive, encouraging attitude and respond to setbacks with patience and calm redirection.
Teach life skills:
Teach and support daily living skills — laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, budgeting, and household upkeep.
Support neurodiversity-affirming care:
Recognize and respond supportively to each resident's individual needs, communication style, and sensory preferences.
Document and communicate:
Note resident mood, participation, and any concerns each shift, and pass along updates to incoming staff and the clinical team.
Maintain the household environment:
Maintain a respectful, safe, and encouraging home environment at all times. What We're Looking For Minimum High School Diploma — this role is fully trained on the job. A genuine interest in mental health, neurodiversity, and helping young adults build independence. Patience, reliability, and a calm, positive presence, including during difficult moments. Strong communication skills and comfort working as part of a team. Ability to pass a background check. Minimum age of 19 years Valid driver's license CPR/First Aid certification (can be completed during training) Training & Support All Residential Counselors complete paid training before working independently with residents, covering the program's behavioral framework, neurodiversity-affirming care practices, de-escalation and redirection techniques, and house procedures. Ongoing supervision and support are provided by the clinical and program leadership team. Schedule & Compensation 8 or 12 hours shifts available, flexible schedule as this is a 24/7 role divided between several coaches $18-20/hour depending on experience To Apply Send resume to hello@smhacademy.com
