What they do
A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Must possess an appropriate Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists credential/license applicable to alcohol and drug counseling services, such as ADT, CSC-AD, CAC-AD, LGADC, or LCADC , as appropriate to the position and level of supervision. Knowledge of substance use disorders (SUD), addiction treatment, recovery principles, relapse prevention, and behavioral health services . Experience working in an outpatient substance use disorder/addiction treatment program preferred. Ability to conduct or assist with screenings, assessments, individualized treatment planning, individual counseling, group counseling, and discharge/aftercare planning , within the scope permitted by the employee's credential. Knowledge of ASAM criteria , person-centered treatment planning, and appropriate levels of care preferred. Ability to maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation, including progress notes, treatment plans, assessments, and other required records. Must understand and comply with applicable Maryland behavioral health regulations, Medicaid requirements, HIPAA, confidentiality requirements, and 42 CFR Part 2 . Strong communication, documentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health needs. Must successfully complete all required background checks, employment verification, and agency-required training . Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred or must be obtained within the agency's required timeframe.
