ADDICTION DRUG COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION FUNCTIONS
Provide counseling to patients in both individual and group sessions (OP, IOP, PHP) on a daily or weekly basis to encourage changes in destructive behaviors and assistance in overcoming dependencies. Complete intakes, biopsychosocial assessments and treatment plans. Prepare and maintain detailed records for every patient containing the patient's history, counseling procedures and services provided, progress completed, and any further issues or treatments required. Communicate effectively with clients, family members, government entities, and colleagues as necessary to evaluate a patient's condition, form relevant and measurable goals, create a customized treatment plan, and share recovery progress. Establish open and honest communication with clients and their family members, and provide detailed information about addiction, behavioral issues, available services and treatment plans, and methods for continuing growth and development. Evaluate patients continually throughout treatment to accurately assess results of specific programs and modify goals and methods as needed, including referring patients to other experts as necessary. Create and implement comprehensive aftercare programs customized to each patient's individual needs and circumstances. Act as liaison between a patient and family members, medical staff, probation officers, and courts as needed to pass along relevant information about treatment and help create a viable support network for continuing care.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, treatment modalities and placement criteria within the continuum of care. Knowledge of models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance use. Knowledge of the social and cultural context within which addiction and substance abuse exist. Knowledge of ethical and behavioral standards of conduct in helping relationships; Knowledge of principles of learning and a variety of educational techniques. Knowledge of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse and dependence. Knowledge of support systems and community resources available to clients, their families and their significant others. Knowledge of federal, State, local and agency policies and procedures governing the delivery of treatment services. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other professionals and agencies. Ability to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients with substance use disorders and their families and significant others. Ability to make constructive therapeutic responses when the client's behavior is inconsistent with stated recovery goals. Ability to accurately document client information.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education or General Requirements:
Associates degree or higher, appropriate state license or certification, and successful passage of background check Ability to communicate and show compassion for clients Understanding diverse cultures OR - The equivalencies are an associate of arts degree from an accredited college or university and two years of paid or volunteer counseling experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The counselor must be certified as a Certified Supervised Counselor Alcohol and Drug (CSC-AD) or Certified Associate Counselor Alcohol and Drug (CAC-AD) in good standing from the State of Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapist. Knowledge of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) required. Licensure- ADT, CSC-AD, CAC-AD, LGADC, LCADC, LMSW, LCSW-C, LGPC, LCPC
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time permanent position with benefits. The starting salary is $27/hr @ 40/week with annual raises.
