Substance Abuse Counselor

About the RoleWe are seeking a compassionate and proactive Behavioral Health Specialist to support clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. This role focuses on enhancing clients' daily living skills, community integration, and sobriety through structured activities, case management, and evidence-based practices aligned with the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model.

Key ResponsibilitiesDeliver training in substance abuse prevention and sobriety maintenance using 12-step principles and evidence-based approaches for co-occurring disordersProvide transportation to community activities and AA/NA meetingsDevelop monthly activity calendars and identify community resources to support recoveryConduct drug screenings as neededComplete documentation including treatment plans and progress notesOrganize and lead social and recreational activities tailored to ACT clienteleManage a caseload of clients, coordinating treatment teams and updating care plans based on evolving needsOffer supportive counseling and symptom managementEducate and advocate for clients and their familiesConduct comprehensive assessments across all life domainsProvide on-call crisis intervention during assigned nights and weekendsMaintain high fidelity to the ACT Model of CarePrincipal AccountabilitiesPlan and implement social, recreational, and educational activities that support sobrietyComplete Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) goals and required documentationDeliver substance abuse educationCoordinate participation in 12-step community activities

QualificationsEducation:

Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Human Services, or Addiction Counseling preferredMinimum ADT Trainee Status or certification (CAC, CAC-AD) required

Experience:

1-3 years of relevant work experience in behavioral health or addiction servicesOn-the-job training (2-3 months) required for optimal performance

Requirements:

Certified or eligible for certification in addictions treatmentValid driver's license with a clean driving recordAbility to work independently with minimal supervisionStrong understanding of mental illness and addiction recovery
