2 positions Manhattan, New York Young Audiences New York is seeking enthusiastic, dependable, and community-minded individuals to serve as Youth Development Group Leaders in our after-school program for students in grades K-5 at PS 165M located in the Upper West Side on Manhattan. This is an excellent opportunity for emerging leaders who enjoy working with children and are interested in youth development, education, the arts, social impact, or community leadership. Group Leaders are active members of the program team and serve as consistent, positive adult role models for children. They help create a safe, joyful, inclusive, and well-structured environment where students can participate, build relationships, develop confidence, and learn. Job Summary Group Leaders support YANY Teaching Artists and DOE staff with small-group management, activity facilitation, positive behavior support, and relationship-building. They also provide leadership during arrival, snack, transitions, early pickup, and dismissal. Successful Group Leaders demonstrate calm confidence, sound judgment, initiative, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping children learn and grow. They are willing to participate fully in training, receive feedback, and develop their own skills as youth-development and social-impact leaders. This is a part-time, in-person position reporting to the Community School Director. The regular schedule is Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Occasional Friday afternoons and two Saturday events, one in December and one in May will also be required. Programming begins Monday, October 5, 2026, and ends Friday, May 28, 2027.

Job Responsibilities:

Actively supervise and engage students during arrival, snack time, activities, transitions, early pickup, dismissal, and throughout all program activities and spaces. Help establish and maintain clear routines, expectations, and a positive, inclusive program community. Build caring, appropriate, and constructive relationships with each participant while fostering positive peer relationships and helping students navigate challenges respectfully. Use positive youth development and behavior support strategies to redirect behavior, reinforce expectations, and help children make constructive choices. Actively engage children in ways that support the positive development of each child and the group, encouraging participants to try new things, express themselves, and actively use their minds and creativity. Support YANY Teaching Artists and DOE teachers with classroom facilitation, small-group management, activity preparation, student engagement, and other program needs. Escort students safely to and from classrooms and program spaces according to the daily schedule and program needs. Facilitate approved, age-appropriate program activities when a Teaching Artist or teacher is unavailable, with guidance from program leadership. Follow all safety, supervision, emergency, and child-protection policies and procedures, making the safety and care of children the highest priority. Record and submit accurate daily attendance, enrollment information, incident documentation, and other required program records. Communicate student concerns, behavioral incidents, injuries, safety issues, or other significant concerns promptly to the Community School Director or designated program leadership. Follow established late-pickup procedures, including contacting authorized family members when participants have not been picked up within the designated timeframe. Inspect program spaces, equipment, and supplies and ensure materials are accounted for and properly stored at the end of each day. Participate fully in required training, coaching, staff meetings, reflection, and professional development related to positive youth development, behavior support, safety, and program facilitation. Model professionalism, responsibility, respect, teamwork, and positive communication for participants, families, colleagues, and school partners. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A genuine interest in working with elementary school children and expanding opportunities for students. An interest in youth development, education, the arts, community service, or social-impact leadership. The maturity, patience, and sound judgment needed to supervise and support children. The ability to be warm and encouraging while maintaining clear expectations and appropriate boundaries. A willingness to learn and use positive youth development, social-emotional learning, and positive behavior-support practices. The ability to remain calm, attentive, and solution-oriented in a busy school environment. A dependable work ethic, including consistent attendance and punctuality. The ability to take initiative, accept feedback, and follow through on responsibilities. The confidence to facilitate engaging, age-appropriate activities when needed. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, coworkers, and school personnel. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a structured program team. Prior experience working with children through employment, volunteering, mentoring, tutoring, camps, schools, community programs, sports, faith-based programs, or family responsibilities preferred. Spanish-language proficiency preferred but not required.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or high school equivalency required; some college coursework preferred. Must complete all required YANY and NYC DOE clearances, including fingerprinting, before beginning work. Must be available for the regular Monday - Thursday schedule, required training sessions, occasional Friday afternoons, and the two scheduled Saturday events.

Compensation:

Group Leaders are paid $20/hour.
