Role Summary:
The High School Special Education Teacher provides specially designed instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with IDEA, Iowa regulations, and district policies. The teacher collaborates with students, families, staff, and AEA/related service providers to ensure access to grade-level standards, meaningful progress toward IEP goals, and successful transition to postsecondary options. Services may include co-taught instruction, resource support, and/or small-group classes, with a focus on academics, executive functioning, behavior, and transition skills.
Core Responsibilities:
Provide specially designed instruction aligned to IEP goals in areas such as reading, writing, math, executive functioning, behavior, and transition skills. Develop, implement, and regularly review IEPs in collaboration with students, families, general education teachers, AEA staff, and related service providers. Use data (screeners, diagnostics, classroom assessments, and progress monitoring) to inform instruction, adjust supports, and document student growth. Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum, accommodations, and assessments; participate in co-teaching and inclusive practices. Implement behavior supports aligned with PBIS, SEL, and trauma-informed approaches; contribute to behavior intervention plans as needed. Maintain accurate and timely records, including IEP documentation, progress reports, service logs, and parent communication logs. Communicate regularly and proactively with families about student progress, strengths, and supports. Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility/reevaluation meetings, MTSS/RTI teams, and student support meetings. Integrate culturally responsive, student-centered practices and foster a safe, inclusive classroom environment that honors student identities. Collaborate with counselors, work-based learning, and transition teams to support postsecondary planning, self-advocacy, and independent living skills. Engage in ongoing professional learning, including evidence-based instructional practices (e.g., structured literacy, explicit instruction, executive function strategies).
