The Director of Responsible AI will help to lead the responsible development, implementation, and use of Artificial Intelligence across the enterprise. This role will serve as a key member of the AI Governance function, partnering with business leaders, data scientists, engineers, Legal, Compliance, and Risk Management to ensure AI solutions are designed, deployed, and monitored in a manner consistent with The Hartford's values, risk appetite, and regulatory obligations. The Director will provide oversight and consultation throughout the AI lifecycle, driving responsible AI practices to enable innovative use of AI technologies that deliver measurable business value.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Responsible AI Governance:
  • + Facilitate governance reviews of AI and Generative AI use cases to identify, assess, and communicate AI risks both from an inherent and residual perspective.

+ Review and interpret AI risk assessments, fairness testing results, model evaluations, monitoring outcomes, and other control evidence to assess solution readiness and ongoing effectiveness.

+ Support development and enhancement of governance frameworks, standards, and procedures that enable scalable and effective AI oversight.

  • Consultation & Enablement:
  • + Serve as a trusted advisor to business and technology stakeholders on Responsible AI development, governance expectations, and emerging regulatory considerations. + Promote practical governance approaches that balance risk management with innovation and business value creation.
  • Emerging Governance and Controls:
  • + Evaluate governance implications of advanced AI capabilities, including Generative AI, reusable AI components, foundation models, and agentic AI systems.

+ Influence governance strategies and control approaches for emerging technologies, including monitoring, intervention, containment, and shutoff mechanisms for autonomous and semi-autonomous systems.

+ Lead the development of or the review for enterprise controls to mitigate AI risks.

  • Required Qualifications:
  • + 10+ years of experience in quantitative science, statistics, data science, AI/ML development, actuarial science, or related discipline.

+ 2+ years of experience developing, deploying, or governing Generative AI solutions. + 1+ years of experience providing consultation, training, teaching, coaching, or advisory services.

+ Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts to business, risk, and executive stakeholders.

+ Strong understanding of AI/ML technologies, Responsible AI principles, and associated governance challenges.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • + Experience working within governance, risk management, controls, compliance, model risk management, or internal audit functions.

+ Experience designing or supporting reusable AI, analytics, or machine learning components and platforms.

+ Experience governing or developing agentic AI systems and familiarity with emerging control approaches, including model context protocols (MCP), monitoring frameworks, intervention controls, human oversight mechanisms, and system shutdown capabilities.

+ Experience within financial services, insurance, or another highly regulated industry.

+ Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, model risk management practices, fairness testing methodologies, and regulatory expectations for AI systems.

Candidates located near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT or Chicago, IL) may be expected to work in the office multiple days per week. Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

  • Compensation
  • The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market.

Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
