The AI Engagement Specialist serves as Shasta Community Health Center's organizational specialist for the practical, responsible, secure, and effective use of artificial intelligence. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the AI Engagement Specialist establishes clear standards, reviews AI vendors and proposed uses, coordinates implementation, and helps staff use approved tools safely and effectively. This is an individual-contributor role with no direct reports. Success requires sound judgment, strong follow-through, and the ability to communicate effectively with people at all professional levels and with a wide variety of personalities, perspectives, and technical experience. Governance and Responsible Use- Develops and maintains practical policies, standards, and approval processes for the responsible use of AI at SCHC.
- Maintains an inventory of approved AI tools and use cases, including accountable owners, risk levels, safeguards, and review dates.
- Supports identification and reduction of unauthorized or inappropriate AI use, seeks to understand the need behind the use, and provides practical approved alternatives whenever possible.
- Partners with appropriate managers and staff to determine when patient notice, disclosure, consent, or other safeguards are required or appropriate for AI-enabled activities, including under applicable California recording and privacy laws.
- Reviews proposed AI tools, embedded vendor features, pilots, and use cases before implementation.
- Evaluates privacy, security, clinical safety, equity, workflow, integration, contract, data-use, and financial considerations in partnership with the appropriate subject-matter experts.
- Partners with clinical, operational, and technical staff to plan and carry out approved AI implementations.
- Monitors adoption, performance, benefits, concerns, and unintended consequences and recommend changes, expansion, suspension, or retirement.
- Creates and delivers hands-on, job-relevant training that shows staff how to use approved AI tools safely, responsibly, and effectively in their daily work.
- Uses demonstrations, realistic work scenarios, guided practice, office hours, coaching, and concise job aids rather than relying only on general or theoretical instruction.
- Teaches users to protect sensitive information, prompt appropriately, recognize limitations and bias, verify outputs, preserve human judgment, document use when required, and report unsafe or inaccurate results. Maintains approved-tool guidance, examples, checklists, FAQs, and other practical resources. Communication and Change Support
- Builds trust and productive working relationships across clinical, administrative, technical, executive, and frontline teams.
- Adapts language, tone, level of detail, and approach for different personalities, professional levels, communication styles, and levels of AI knowledge. Explains complex topics clearly, listens to concerns, facilitates decisions, and helps teams adopt changes without losing sight of patient care, workflow, or accountability. Program Administration
- Provides the Chief Information Officer and appropriate managers with concise updates on AI projects, risks, adoption, outcomes, incidents, and value.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of generative AI, large language models, machine-learning-enabled technology, and AI-enabled enterprise applications, including their practical capabilities, limitations, and risks. Working knowledge of healthcare privacy and security, clinical quality and patient safety, data governance, vendor risk, and change management. Ability to translate technical, clinical, legal, ethical, and operational issues into clear, practical guidance. Strong written and verbal communication, listening, facilitation, conflict-navigation, coaching, and presentation skills. Ability to organize complex work, manage multiple priorities, document decisions, meet deadlines, and follow through. Ability to evaluate evidence, question unsupported claims, and make balanced recommendations based on risk, mission fit, and measurable value.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, public health, business, organizational leadership, health informatics, compliance, information systems, or a related field; equivalent education and directly relevant experience may be considered. Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in healthcare operations, organizational change, digital health, clinical informatics, compliance, privacy, enterprise technology, quality improvement, or a related area. Experience leading cross-functional initiatives in a regulated environment. Demonstrated experience evaluating, implementing, governing, or supporting generative AI, machine-learning-enabled technology, or AI-enabled enterprise applications. Experience developing or applying governance, risk, vendor review, implementation, training, or assurance processes for complex technology.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in an FQHC, community health center, safety-net provider, or other mission-driven healthcare setting. Previous experience working in an outpatient clinic or doctor's office.BENEFITS
