Job Title:
AOI Operator/ Programmer Reports to:
Quality Manager/ Technical Director Job Summary:
Reliance CM is seeking an AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) Operator / Programmer to support inspection of surface-mount printed circuit board assemblies. This position operates the company's AOI equipment, develops and refines inspection programs, and verifies results to ensure assemblies meet customer and IPC quality requirements. The role balances inspection throughput with defect-detection accuracy and works closely with the SMT operators and the quality department to support continuous improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate AOI equipment to inspect PCB assemblies for defects including missing components, misalignment, polarity and orientation errors, solder defects, and tombstoning.
  • Create, edit, and optimize AOI inspection programs from YCD files, BOMs, and physical boards; tune inspection parameters to minimize false calls while maintaining defect coverage.
  • Document inspection results, defect data and provide feedback to SMT and reflow.
  • Fill out defect trackers for rework associates when applicable.
  • Maintain inspection programs under revision control and update programs as engineering changes or board revisions occur while following our internal change control processes.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, calibration checks, and basic troubleshooting; escalate equipment issues as needed to our technical department.
  • Communicate inspection findings and quality trends to production and quality personnel.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and maintain compliance with the company's quality management system.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of SMT assembly processes and common assembly defects.
  • Ability to read and interpret assembly guides and BOMs.
  • Familiarity with
IPC-A-610
acceptability standards, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency and comfort learning inspection software.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with production and quality teams.
Education and Experience:
  • Prior experience in an electronics manufacturing or PCB assembly environment.
  • Prior AOI operation and/or programming experience on any platform is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with YESTech AOI systems is a plus but not required — training will be provided.
  • IPC-A-610 and/or
J-STD-001
certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform close-up visual inspection work.
  • Ability to handle small components and PCB assemblies with manual dexterity.
  • Comfortable working under magnification for prolonged periods to inspect fine-pitch components and solder joints.

From $21.50 per hour
