Full Job Description Desktop Support Specialist City of O'Fallon, Missouri Pay Range:
$27.28/hour The City of O'Fallon is seeking a skilled and service‑oriented Desktop Support Specialist to help maintain the City's hardware, software, and information systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands‑on technical work, solving problems, and supporting a diverse group of users across a fast‑growing community. About the Role The Desktop Support Specialist plays a key part in keeping the City's technology running smoothly. You'll respond to equipment issues, support end users, maintain hardware and software, and assist with ongoing improvements to the City's IT environment. Your work directly supports the efficiency and effectiveness of City operations. Key Responsibilities Respond to trouble calls and diagnose equipment issues. Perform local and remote testing, including running diagnostic programs. Repair equipment, build cables, replace components, and identify hardware failures. Prepare and install computers, peripherals, and network connections. Assist with software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Diagnose and resolve hardware and software malfunctions. Coordinate equipment repairs with external vendors. Maintain inventory of spare parts and repurpose usable components. Implement and maintain information systems and enhancements. Train users on basic computer and equipment operation. Assist in developing proposals for IT system procurement. Operate IT‑related equipment such as scanners, printers, plotters, and graphics devices. Support demonstrations, site preparations, equipment moves, and wiring changes. Review system logs to ensure proper server operation. Follow security procedures to protect systems and data integrity. Monitor network activity and assist remote users. Respond to equipment malfunctions and coordinate vendor support when needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of IT terminology, tools, and methodologies. Understanding of IT record‑keeping practices. Ability to diagnose hardware and software issues. Knowledge of data communications networks. Strong communication and customer‑service skills. Ability to install and troubleshoot computer components and software packages. Ability to resolve operating system malfunctions. Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions. Ability to conduct user training sessions. Minimum Qualifications Associate degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge. One to two years of experience in a similar role or through an apprenticeship/internship. Relevant certifications preferred (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, Microsoft certifications).
