Job Description
Position Summary The Firmware Developer is responsible for developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining embedded firmware used in RCAL Products products and projects. This position works closely with the hardware team to validate circuit functionality, implement low-level firmware solutions, integrate existing libraries, and support the development of reliable and reusable designs. The Firmware Developer also provides technical input during project planning and proposal development and contributes to the continued growth and knowledge of the engineering team. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain embedded firmware for assigned products and projects. Develop firmware used to validate and troubleshoot electronic circuits and hardware designs. Debug circuits and firmware using appropriate industry-standard development and diagnostic tools. Implement low-level firmware functionality required to support hardware and product requirements. Integrate existing firmware libraries and components into new designs when appropriate. Perform firmware testing and validation to confirm functionality and identify potential issues. Troubleshoot and resolve firmware and hardware integration issues. Document firmware designs, revisions, testing, and technical findings as required. Maintain and contribute to the company's design-for-reuse repository. Provide technical input and research to support project proposals, planning, and feasibility assessments. Identify and communicate technical risks, project dependencies, development challenges, and potential delays to team leadership. Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and other engineering collaboration activities as required. Participate in regular one-on-one meetings and team meetings. Maintain and expand technical knowledge through ongoing professional development. Mentor interns or less-experienced team members when assigned. Develop technical articles or other knowledge-sharing materials as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned. Performance Expectations Complete assigned work within established project timelines and communicate potential delays or barriers in a timely manner. Provide reasonable estimates for assigned development work and communicate significant changes in scope or expected completion time. Produce firmware that meets established functional, technical, testing, and quality requirements. Maintain accurate and appropriate technical documentation. Follow established engineering processes, coding practices, and development standards. Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with team members and leadership. Demonstrate conduct consistent with RCAL Products established workplace values and expectations. Required Qualifications Education or equivalent experience in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related technical field. Experience developing embedded firmware. Experience with firmware development, debugging, testing, and validation. Working knowledge of embedded systems and electronic hardware. Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, specifications, and related engineering materials. Ability to troubleshoot firmware and hardware integration issues. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage assigned priorities and communicate effectively regarding project status, risks, and technical issues. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an engineering team. Preferred Qualifications Experience with low-level or hardware-adjacent firmware development. Experience using common embedded development and circuit debugging tools. Experience integrating existing firmware libraries into new products or designs. Experience developing reusable firmware components or maintaining shared code repositories. Experience supporting hardware validation and product development. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to perform work at a computer for extended periods. Ability to work with electronic components, development boards, test equipment, and other engineering tools.
