This role supports research computing needs by ensuring reliable, scalable, and secure compute, storage, and networking resources. The position works closely with faculty, researchers, and IT leadership to align HPC capabilities with institutional research priorities, ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance with security standards. Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur so that customer satisfaction is met at all times. Responsibilities Essential Position Functions & Duties 40% HPC Infrastructure Design, Build, and Operations Design, deploy, and maintain HPC cluster infrastructure, including compute nodes, storage, and networking components Manage system provisioning, configuration, and upgrades across HPC environments Administer job scheduling systems and optimize workload distribution Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements Maintain high availability and reliability of HPC systems Implement automation for system deployment, patching, and maintenance 20% Research Support and Optimization Collaborate with researchers to support computational workflows and optimize job performance Assist with software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting in HPC environments Provide guidance on efficient resource usage and parallel computing strategies Support GPU and data-intensive workloads 20% Security, Compliance, and Data Management Implement and maintain security controls aligned with institutional and federal requirements (e.g., CMMC baseline, HIPAA) Ensure proper data handling, storage, and backup strategies for research data Monitor access controls and system usage for compliance and risk mitigation 10% HPC Operations, Service Management, and Cost Recovery Support operational management of HPC resources as a shared institutional Assist with or administer usage tracking, billing, and cost recovery processes for HPC services Monitor utilization and resource consumption to support financial planning and sustainability Coordinate with leadership to ensure maintenance agreements, licensing, and support contracts are tracked and renewed Contribute to planning and reporting related to operational costs, capacity, and service growth Support development of policies and procedures for equitable and efficient use of shared computing resources 5% Documentation and Training Develop and maintain technical documentation for HPC systems, processes, and usage guidelines Provide training and user support for researchers and technical staff Non-Essential Position Functions & Duties 5% Marginal Functions (5%) Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications The applicant must meet the following: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field from an accredited university. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Experience managing Linux-based systems and high-performance computing (HPC) environments Strong knowledge of cluster architecture, distributed systems, and parallel computing concepts Experience with job schedulers (e.g., SLURM, PBS, or similar) Experience with storage systems (NAS, SAN, parallel file systems such as Lustre or GPFS) Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, Bash, or similar) Experience with system monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning Understanding of networking fundamentals (high-speed interconnects such as InfiniBand or Ethernet) Strong troubleshooting and system optimization skills Ability to collaborate with researchers, IT staff, and vendors Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting research computing environments or academic HPC systems Knowledge of cloud-based HPC or hybrid environments (Azure, AWS, or similar) Familiarity with containerization technologies (Singularity, Docker) Experience with data security and compliance frameworks (e.g., CMMC, NIST 800-171) Experience with GPU computing and accelerator-based workloads
