Mid-Senior Level Industries:
Technology, Software, IT, Electronics Description Description The objective of this requirement is to support NOAA's research and development (R D) work to advance NOAA's scientific mission efforts, including hurricane research, model development, and code and data management in areas including: developing advanced analysis frameworks and software tools, code management, model code development for component and coupled models, scientific analysis, technical support and algorithm development, maintenance of data processing infrastructure, and archive of data and products for future analysis and use. Project requirements encompass delivering code and software management, in addition to documented evaluations and assessments of model prototypes. Advance hurricane prediction capabilities through refined code enhancements for the GFDL T-SHiELD modeling system. Specifically, we aim to drive improvements to the FV3 dynamical core, physical parametrizations, and model initialization techniques intended to address key scientific challenges related to hurricane intensity and structure prediction. The operational software codebase for a GFDL experimental near-real-time 3-km resolution hurricane prediction system, incorporating enhancements to the FV3 dynamical core, surface layer, boundary layer, and convection parameterizations. The software codebase for a turbulence-permitting resolution hurricane model featuring a new unified sub-grid diffusion scheme intended to enhance FV3's capability in simulating extreme weather phenomena at sub-km resolutions, including tropical cyclones, tornadoes, and mesoscale convective systems. The software codebase for a regional coupled high-resolution atmospheric-ocean-wave modeling system designed to support improvements in enhancing the representation of coupled air-sea-wave processes for better hurricane intensity forecasts and storm structure representations. Authoring or co-authoring one or more manuscripts detailing the results of the modeling efforts, submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Preparing and presenting materials (e.g., slide decks, posters) summarizing the results of this work for a presentation at AGU, AMS, and/or other scientific conferences or workshops.
