Responsibilities:
The System Engineer I assists in the management and administration of multi-platform infrastructure (Linux, macOS, and Windows) at the desktop, lab and workstation level. Bridges the gap between traditional IT systems and specialized engineering lab environments, ensuring that both high-performance computing resources and lab-specific workstation deployments are secure, automated, and high-performing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Deploys and supportsheterogeneous ennnvironment, with a heavy emphasis on Linux (RHEL/Ubuntu) for departmental servers and macOS/Windows for student and faculty workstations.

Analyzes use case requirements, design solutions and deploys on-premise or cloud based infrastructure. Demonstrates knowledge of on-premise virtual infrastructure, specifically in clustered high availability environments. Assists in integrating on-premise solutions with cloud solutions. Deploys solutions hosted on both cloud services and on-premise infrastructure. Performs proactive performance monitoring, analysis, alerting, reporting and tuning. Prepares capacity analyses and provision solutions. Completes maintenance activities including deploying patches and ensuring that firmware and software are up to date. Prepares incident and problem analysis reports, resolves and completes follow-up tasks to ensure platform stability. Escalates when appropriate. Supports the integration of specialized lab equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, signal generators, FPGA development boards) with networked workstations. Assists in maintaining driver compatibility and data acquisition pipelines. Performs implementation and maintenance activities during business hours as well as outside of business hours. Serves in 24-hour on-call rotations when scheduled. Maintains an interoperability Matrix in order to ensure cross-vendor compatibility. Creates and maintains technical documentation including solution designs and reference guides. Evaluates new products and services that will help enhance the delivery of infrastructure services. Prepares necessary paperwork and documentation to ensure conformance to University standards and procedures. Maintains a broad knowledge of technology, equipment, and/or systems. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Data Science, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred 3 years of related experience required Equivalent combination of education and experience required Experience in higher education field and/or a healthcare environment preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to interact with all levels of staff, as appropriate, to communicate, and to process communications from others on technical change required Ability to present technology in non-technical terms and recognize the extent to which a given audience requires this; required Ability to provide on-call support as required, and ability to perform after-hours and weekend maintenance and implementation activities required Ability to travel to and from Data Center facilities required.
