Who We Are ISO New England plays a critical role in the region's energy future. We oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid serving all six New England states and administer the region's wholesale electricity markets. Our work helps ensure more than 14 million people can count on reliable electricity to power their homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, and everyday lives. Department Description The Power System Modeling and Support team creates and maintains the Energy Management System (EMS) breaker-node model used by system operators to monitor and operate the New England transmission grid. The team also supports EMS Network Applications that help power operations and market teams maintain reliability and administer the region's wholesale electricity markets. What You'll be Working On As an intern, you'll help review and verify key modeling data, including substation one-line diagrams, generator and transformer modeling information, and metering data mapped to network elements. After building familiarity with the data and processes, you'll partner with experienced staff to explore automation opportunities that improve the efficiency and accuracy of model verification. You'll gain exposure to power system substation design, core power system modeling concepts, and the role EMS tools play in monitoring a real-life electric grid. This experience is designed to help you connect classroom learning to practical grid operations while developing technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. How You'll Make an Impact Accurate grid modeling is essential to two of ISO New England's core responsibilities: operating the regional power grid reliably and supporting the administration of wholesale electricity markets. Your work will contribute to the quality of the EMS model, helping teams better monitor grid conditions and support reliable, efficient energy operations across New England. What We Look for in a Candidate Currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering; rising juniors are preferred, though rising sophomores are encouraged to apply. Interest in power systems, grid operations, data verification, automation, or technical problem solving. Proficiency with Excel; experience using Excel VBA macros is preferred. Strong attention to detail, curiosity, ability to learn quickly, and a collaborative mindset. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Interns are eligible for some paid time off benefits and have access to our wellness program. Our internships also provide interns with exposure to the energy industry, mentorships, and real-world experience. This is a U.S. based role. If the successful candidate resides outside of the U.S., relocation will be required. To be eligible for an internship with ISO New England, a candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
