Job Description

The Database Administrator I supports the day-to-day health, security, and performance of the hospital's database systems, with a primary focus on our
MEDITECH
environment and the
MEDITECH
Data Repository (DR). Working closely with our small IT team and our Business and Clinical Analytics (BCA) staff, this role keeps critical clinical and operational systems running reliably, writes and troubleshoots SQL reports, and helps automate routine work. This is a hands-on role suited to a developing DBA ready to grow into broader database ownership over time. All work is performed in compliance with HIPAA and hospital information security policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Administration Monitor database health, performance, storage, and backup/disaster recovery jobs; identify and resolve errors, space issues, and job failures. Install, configure, patch, and maintain SQL Server (and other supported database platforms) on hospital servers. Support vendor-managed and cloud-hosted databases, coordinating with vendors on incidents, upgrades, and change requests. Maintain database security in line with HIPAA and hospital policy, including access controls, auditing, and encryption where applicable. SQL Reporting and BCA Support Write, modify, and troubleshoot SQL queries against the
MEDITECH
Data Repository to deliver reports for clinical, financial, and operational stakeholders. Partner with the BCA team to develop, validate, and tune queries launched in the BCA environment. Use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to author reports, debug query issues, and make basic to intermediate performance improvements. Investigate and resolve report and data issues caused by application behavior, query logic, or underlying data conditions. Automation and Documentation Develop simple scripts (PowerShell, Bash, or Python) to automate routine maintenance, monitoring, and reporting tasks, reducing manual workload for the IT team. Create and maintain clear, practical documentation including runbooks, recovery procedures, and report inventories. Take ownership of assigned systems and tasks with limited supervision, escalating appropriately when needed. Required Qualifications Working knowledge of relational database concepts and SQL. Hands-on experience with at least one common relational database platform (Microsoft SQL Server preferred; MySQL or PostgreSQL also considered). Ability to write and troubleshoot basic to intermediate SQL queries. Experience using SQL Server Management Studio or a comparable tool. Basic scripting ability in at least one of: PowerShell, Bash, or Python. Strong troubleshooting mindset. Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a healthcare IT environment. Familiarity with MEDITECH, the
MEDITECH
Data Repository (DR), or comparable EHR data structures. Exposure to Business and Clinical Analytics (BCA) tools and workflows. Experience supporting vendor-managed or cloud-hosted databases. Familiarity with one or more of: Java, Python, JavaScript, PowerShell. Experience with backup/recovery tools and database monitoring platforms. Education and Experience Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience. 1+ years of hands-on experience with database administration, SQL reporting, or a closely related IT role. Recent graduates with strong relevant coursework, internships, or project experience will be considered. Growth and Development This position is structured to grow with the right candidate. The hospital is committed to providing on-the-job training, mentorship from senior IT staff, and exposure to MEDITECH, BCA, and broader infrastructure work, with the expectation that the incumbent will take on increasing ownership of database systems over time.
