Controls / Automation Engineer - Custom Automation We are seeking an experienced Controls / Automation Engineer to support a large-scale custom automation project involving the design, programming, integration, and debugging of sophisticated automated manufacturing equipment. This position is focused on custom machine automation rather than production or plant support . The engineer will work with complex equipment consisting of multiple production lines, modules, and individual automated stations, each operating through dedicated control systems. Responsibilities Develop, modify, and debug PLC and HMI programs for custom automated equipment. Support machine integration, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Work with Beckhoff controls , or Rockwell platforms utilizing Structured Text . Troubleshoot controls, sensors, motion, I/O, communications, and automated equipment. Support integration and debugging of multiple automated stations and machine modules. Work closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing engineering teams. Assist with system testing and equipment acceptance prior to and during deployment. Support vision-system integration and troubleshooting when applicable. Travel to Mexico for extended onsite commissioning, installation, and debugging activities. Qualifications 5-10 years of controls, automation, or machine programming experience. Strong hands-on PLC and HMI programming experience. Beckhoff experience strongly preferred. Candidates without Beckhoff experience should have strong Rockwell / Allen-Bradley experience with Structured Text or C# programming experience . Experience designing, programming, commissioning, or debugging custom automated machinery or equipment . Strong troubleshooting and debugging capabilities. Experience with Cognex vision systems is a plus. Background with machine builders, system integrators, OEM equipment, or custom automation environments strongly preferred. Must be comfortable performing hands-on support and debugging rather than primarily production support. Travel Requirements This position requires extensive travel to Mexico , with onsite rotations typically lasting 6-8 weeks at a time . Travel is expected for approximately 50 weeks of the project , so candidates must be comfortable with prolonged onsite assignments. A valid U.S. passport is required at the time of travel and should be secured well in advance.
