Job Description
Position Summary The PACS Administrator is responsible for the management, maintenance, and optimization of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) under the direction of the Director of Information Systems. This role ensures the reliable storage, retrieval, and distribution of medical images across the healthcare organization. The PACS Administrator collaborates closely with radiologists, clinicians, and IT teams to provide technical support, troubleshoot system issues, implement upgrades, and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring system integrity, data security, and seamless integration between PACS and other hospital systems such as HIS and EMR. Key Responsibilities PACS System Management Manage daily operations of the PACS, ensuring accurate storage, retrieval, and transmission of medical imagesMonitor system performance and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal functionalityReview and analyze daily PACS system logs and respond to alerts, errors, and warningsOversee maintenance and replacement of PACS hardware, including servers, storage, and workstationsPerform daily PACS maintenance activities as required User Access and Security Create and manage login access for radiologists, radiology staff, and hospital physiciansEstablish and maintain role-based access controlsRespond promptly to urgent login or password issuesDevelop, enforce, and monitor policies related to system security, monitoring, and HIPAA complianceMonitor PACS usage and report any misuse to the Director of Information Systems Technical Support and Troubleshooting Provide technical support and training to radiologists, physicians, and clinical staffTroubleshoot and resolve PACS-related hardware, software, and network issuesRespond to emergent PACS outages or access issuesCoordinate with vendors for advanced technical supportDocument system issues, resolutions, and configuration changes System Integration and Interoperability Maintain and optimize HL7, DICOM, and other interface protocolsServe as liaison between PACS and hospital systems such as HIS and EMREnsure seamless data flow and system interoperabilityTest and validate interfaces following system updates or changes System Updates and Implementation Plan and execute PACS software updates, patches, and upgradesLead installation, testing, and implementation of new PACS-related systems and applicationsParticipate in system upgrade projects from planning through go-liveStay current on PACS technology trends and industry best practices Help Desk and Support Ticket Management Monitor and respond to PACS-related Help Desk ticketsDocument all support interactions and maintain detailed recordsProvide status updates to users via Help Desk or emailEscalate complex issues to vendors or IT resources as neededAnalyze support trends to identify opportunities for system improvement Project and On-Call Support Participate in system implementations, migrations, and hardware deploymentsAssist with infrastructure improvements and optimization initiativesParticipate in on-call rotation for after-hours information systems support, as needed Required Education and Experience Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, Radiology, or a related fieldActive certification in one or more of the following:
Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP)PACS Administrators Registry and Certification Association (PARCA)American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with relevant specialty 3 to 5 years of experience in PACS administration or healthcare IT Minimum Qualifications Associate degree in a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience, orHigh school diploma with 7+ years of extensive PACS or healthcare IT experienceAbility to obtain a relevant certification within one year of hireDemonstrated proficiency with PACS systems and medical imaging workflowsStrong understanding of HL7 and DICOM standards
