Senior Linux Engineer designing, maintaining, and securing Linux infrastructure across physical, virtual, and cloud environments. Leads automation, monitoring, and vulnerability remediation initiatives to support research, testing, and business operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Architect, deploy, and support Linux infrastructure across bare metal, virtual, and cloud environments. Design and enforce Linux hardening standards, manage vulnerability response, and remediate security issues. Maintain critical Linux-hosted platforms such as GitLab, LibreNMS, Nagios, and Splunk components. Design and improve IT monitoring, alerting, and incident response for systems, storage, services, and SSL certificates. Prioritize and complete Linux-related tickets, maintenance, patching, and lifecycle activities. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to IT team members, lab, and engineering users. Maintain documentation, SOPs, and knowledge-transfer materials; support license and contract renewals. Collaborate with development, security, infrastructure, lab, and operations teams to reduce operational risk. Evaluate and introduce new Linux technologies where appropriate. Document fixes to prevent recurrence of incidents.
Qualifications:
4+ years of hands-on Linux systems engineering experience in production, enterprise, lab, or mission-critical environments. Strong knowledge of common Linux distributions and enterprise licensing. Experience administering, patching, securing, and troubleshooting Linux servers at scale, with vulnerability management and solid networking fundamentals. Strong scripting and automation skills, with experience in infrastructure-as-code, source control, and monitoring/alerting tools. Strong documentation and communication skills, with ability to work independently and manage multiple systems or projects simultaneously.
Preferred Skills:
Strong knowledge of a major Linux distribution and enterprise licensing and vendor coordination. Experience with configuration management, infrastructure-as-code, virtualization, and containerization. Experience with backup and recovery platforms, cloud platforms, and CI/CD or DevOps practices. Experience developing monitoring and reporting automation, supporting SSL certificate lifecycle, lab or research-oriented infrastructure, and disaster recovery planning. 7+ years of Linux systems engineering experience, including prior senior or lead-level responsibility. Strong technical judgment and ownership mindset, balancing day-to-day operational support with long-term improvements in reliability, security, and automation. Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with ability to mentor peers, drive technical decisions across teams, and manage competing priorities.
