Field Network Technician (1099 Contract) —
Multi-Site Retrofit Project Location:
Multiple retail locations,
San Diego County, CA Schedule:
After-hours / overnight work (store-closed hours)
Type:
1099 Independent Contractor — project-based, ~30 sites
Compensation:
$55•75/hr + per-site completion bonus (details below) About the Project We're a growing IT/MSP firm managing network infrastructure for retail and hospitality clients across the country. We're kicking off a large retrofit project: migrating and standardizing network infrastructure across 30+ store locations , replacing legacy network stack with new managed networking equipment. All work happens after hours to avoid disrupting live store operations. What You'll Do Install and configure managed network switches (VLAN trunking, port profiles) Mount, cable, and configure wireless access points for full-coverage retail/restaurant environments Terminate and test structured cabling (Cat5e/Cat6) as needed Configure and segment VLANs for POS, guest Wi-Fi, cameras, and back-office systems Rack and stack equipment, label and document each site cleanly Test and validate connectivity (POS terminals, handhelds, printers, cameras) before leaving site Work independently overnight with minimal supervision, following a standardized site checklist Communicate site completion status and any issues same night What You Bring Solid hands-on experience with networking switches, wireless access points, and VLAN configuration Comfortable with structured cabling and basic rack work Experience with Ubiquiti/UniFi equipment strongly preferred Ability to work independently overnight, manage your own time across a site checklist Reliable transportation and tools; can travel to assigned store locations within San Diego County Strong communication — you'll be looping in a remote team while on site 1099 / self-employed comfortable — you manage your own taxes and are not a firm employee Project Details ~30+ sites total, one site completed per scheduled night Work performed after store close, typically starting 9-11 PM depending on location Site-by-site scheduling coordinated in advance Compensation Base rate: $55•75/hour (1099, paid per invoice) Completion bonus: $75•150 per site completed successfully on schedule with no rework needed
