Job Description
Senior Software Engineer - .NET & Enterprise Systems About the Role We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join an enterprise technology team focused on building, maintaining, and modernizing critical business applications. This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working within complex, established environments and understands that great software engineering is about more than writing code. You'll be responsible for understanding how systems support the business, translating real-world requirements into thoughtful technical solutions, and improving existing applications without disrupting the operations that depend on them. The current environment is heavily centered around C#, .NET, and SQL Server , while the team is actively modernizing its technology foundation. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to initiatives involving Linux, Docker, containerization, cloud-native technologies, and more portable data solutions . The ideal candidate is comfortable operating across the full software development lifecycle and can move between technical implementation, architecture, requirements gathering, and collaboration with business stakeholders. What You'll Do Design, develop, maintain, and modernize enterprise applications using C# and .NET , including .NET Framework and modern .NET Take ownership of significant portions of the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, technical design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support Work with SQL Server data layers, including schema design, complex queries, stored procedures, and performance optimization Contribute to the modernization and migration of applications toward Linux-based container environments Containerize .NET applications using Docker and contribute to orchestration strategies using Kubernetes or comparable technologies Collaborate directly with business stakeholders to understand workflows, clarify requirements, and translate business needs into technical solutions Challenge requirements and approaches when necessary to identify potential risks, gaps, or opportunities for improvement before development begins Build and consume REST APIs and integrate applications with internal and third-party systems Apply strong software design principles, coding standards, architectural patterns, and development practices Identify technical debt and help develop practical, prioritized plans for addressing it Troubleshoot and support applications in production environments Mentor less experienced developers and contribute to the overall growth of the engineering team Document technical decisions, system behavior, and implementation details to support long-term maintainability What We're Looking For Technical Experience Strong professional experience with C# and the .NET ecosystem Experience working across both .NET Framework and modern .NET Strong understanding of object-oriented design, SOLID principles , and common enterprise design patterns Strong SQL Server experience, including database design, complex queries, stored procedures, and performance tuning Experience with Docker and application containerization Familiarity with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration platforms Comfortable working in Linux environments , including troubleshooting and application operation Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and production deployments Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs Understanding of distributed systems and application integration patterns Business & SDLC Experience Experience gathering, clarifying, and documenting business requirements Ability to understand complex business workflows and accurately translate them into software Experience owning or co-owning the end-to-end SDLC , beyond simply writing code Strong ability to evaluate requirements and identify when a request needs to be reconsidered or reframed Strong written communication skills, particularly around technical documentation and design decisions Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Working Style Highly autonomous and capable of managing priorities, commitments, and quality without close supervision A systems thinker who considers downstream impacts before making changes to shared systems Comfortable working within complex, established applications and environments Honest and transparent about technical risk, scope, and delivery timelines Comfortable navigating ambiguity and bringing structure to unclear requirements Collaborative and willing to mentor and support other engineers Takes ownership of problems from discovery through resolution Nice to Have Experience migrating .NET applications from Windows environments to Linux-based containers Experience with alternative relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL Exposure to cloud-native application architecture and open-source technologies Experience with workflow or BPM platforms Experience designing workflow or state-machine logic Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments Familiarity with message queues, event-driven architecture, or asynchronous integration patterns Experience working across Microsoft and non-Microsoft technology ecosystems Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
