Position Summary The Solutions Architect translates customer requirements and field conditions into reliable, standards-aligned network infrastructure. This is a hybrid design-and-delivery role for someone who can plan network pathways, determine MDF and IDF strategy, select copper and fiber media, develop implementation documents, and then step into the field to manage, lead, test, commission, or troubleshoot the work when needed. The ideal candidate brings 5-7 years of structured-cabling or network-infrastructure experience, strong practical judgment, and meaningful hands-on field experience in retail, warehouse, commercial, or light-industrial environments. Core Responsibilities Network Architecture and Design Design or conduct site surveys and document device locations, measured cable routes, building geometry, pathway elevations, environmental conditions, power availability, electromagnetic-interference risks, access constraints, and future growth needs. Design physical network pathways and telecommunications spaces, including carrier entrances, MDFs, IDFs, equipment rooms, telecommunications rooms/enclosures, racks, cabinets, patch fields, fiber enclosures, and work-area or device outlets. Determine when a single MDF is sufficient and when one or more IDFs are required based on actual copper routes, device density, high-bay geometry, maintainability, environmental conditions, resilience, and expansion plans. Design fiber backbones between MDFs and IDFs, including media type, strand count, topology, route diversity, enclosure/adapter requirements, transceivers, loss budget, labeling, testing, and spare capacity. Select Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, shielded or unshielded balanced cabling, industrial Ethernet cable, and single-mode or multimode fiber according to bandwidth, PoE, distance, environment, pathway capacity, lifecycle, and customer requirements. Develop pathway plans using cable tray, basket tray, ladder rack, J-hooks, conduit, sleeves, surface raceway, protective drops, cabinets, barriers, and approved firestop systems. Coordinate designs with customers, IT, facilities, project managers, electrical contractors, general contractors, controls integrators, equipment vendors, firestop professionals, and authorities having jurisdiction as applicable. Field Installation, Testing, and Commissioning Perform or lead installation of copper horizontal cabling, fiber backbones, racks, cabinets, patch panels, fiber enclosures, cable management, pathways, outlets, and protected device drops when project conditions require hands-on support. Install and connect common network endpoints, including wireless access points, IP cameras, digital signage, phones, printers, access-control equipment, sensors, building-system interfaces, switches, and selected industrial devices. Terminate and inspect copper systems using T568A or T568B, approved jacks, patch panels, field-termination plugs, modular plugs, strain relief, shield-continuity methods, and category-compatible components. Inspect, clean, connect, and troubleshoot fiber systems while maintaining connector cleanliness, bend radius, polarity, protection, and approved handling practices. Use appropriate tools to perform wire-map, qualification, copper certification, PoE, optical insertion-loss, visual fault-location, and OTDR testing; interpret results and drive corrective action. Troubleshoot excessive loss, crosstalk, return-loss failures, damaged cable, low negotiated speed, packet loss, intermittent links, PoE failures, electromagnetic interference, dirty fiber, polarity issues, excessive optical loss, and incompatible optics. Support cutovers, commissioning, punch-list resolution, and owner acceptance while protecting active customer operations. Project Development and Documentation Prepare design narratives, scopes of work, bills of material, labor assumptions, pathway details, rack elevations, port schedules, labeling conventions, test plans, commissioning requirements, and acceptance criteria. Review drawings, submittals, product data, manufacturer instructions, certifications, test reports, change requests, and field conditions for technical completeness and compatibility. Maintain accurate redlines and produce complete closeout packages with as-built floor plans, cable routes, rack elevations, port schedules, cable and fiber assignments, labeling records, test results, equipment lists, photographs, warranty information, and change history. Help improve Asset Enterprises standards, templates, installation methods, quality controls, training materials, and lessons-learned practices. Required Qualifications Approximately 5-7 years of progressive experience in structured cabling, network infrastructure, telecommunications, low-voltage systems, field services, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated field experience installing, terminating, testing, troubleshooting, or leading copper and fiber infrastructure—not design experience alone. Ability to develop practical MDF/IDF, copper-horizontal, fiber-backbone, pathway, rack, cabinet, and endpoint designs from site-survey findings and customer requirements. Working knowledge of Category 5e, Category 6, Category 6A, U/UTP and shielded cabling, single-mode and multimode fiber, Power over Ethernet, and industrial-environment considerations. Ability to read architectural, electrical, reflected-ceiling, technology, rack-elevation, and shop drawings; measure routes; identify conflicts; and translate findings into actionable documentation. Experience with copper and fiber test equipment and the ability to distinguish continuity, qualification, certification, insertion-loss, and OTDR testing. Strong written, verbal, and customer-facing communication skills, including the ability to explain technical choices to nontechnical stakeholders. Sound judgment, ownership, organization, attention to detail, and a consistent commitment to safety and quality. Ability to be based in the Upstate of South Carolina and travel to customer or project sites as business needs require.
