Job Summary The Research Engineer will work with the CeRIS team on an interdisciplinary research project focused on developing AI-enabled systems for real-time seed analysis. The research aims to support automated assessment of seed yield and quality traits using imaging, machine learning, and edge computing technologies. The position will assist with the development, testing, and deployment of AI models for analyzing seed images and supporting real-time decision-making. Responsibilities may include data collection, image processing, model training, system integration, performance evaluation, technical documentation, and support for prototype development. The Research Engineer will work closely with faculty, students, researchers, and project collaborators to support research activities, prepare project deliverables, and contribute to the development of a deployable AI-enabled seed monitoring system. Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks Help design and conduct research within a specified field. Receive advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator. Responsible for leading a project (in vitro and in vivo). Operate specific equipment within the Chemistry lab. Teach techniques to others within the department. Train and supervise junior research staff, including students. Perform additional duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering. Preferred Education/Experience Ph.D. in in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering preferred. Background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, image processing, or a closely related area. Strong programming skills, preferably in Python. Experience with data processing, model development, model evaluation, and technical documentation. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, or similar tools is preferred. Experience with imaging systems, embedded systems, Edge AI platforms, or real-time data analysis is a plus. Ability to work with research datasets, organize experimental results, and support data-driven analysis. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Excellent track record of research and publications related to the job description. Exceptional programming skills (Python is required, ROS, C# and C++ are desired). Fluent in English. Experience with sensing technologies, computer vision, and perception. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. Work collaboratively and cooperatively with university personnel at all levels. Respond flexibly and positively in all circumstances, working calmly under pressure. Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, researchers, and external collaborators. Willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and research methods related to AI-enabled agricultural systems.
