Department English and Philosophy Position Type Faculty Employment Status Term Salary Minimum $58,760.00 per 9 months Open Date 11/10/2025 Close Date Open Until Filled No Effective Date of Employment Position Summary Information Job Description Summary Teach five (5) English courses per regular semester that could include online courses and/or dual-credit/early college classes. Evaluate students' progress and performance and assign grades. Work with students of varied backgrounds. Plan and evaluate English curriculum and effectiveness of English instruction. Research and identify appropriate textbooks and other instructional materials. Provide academic advisement for students. Hold conferences with students. Assist with marketing the program and with recruiting students. Keep posted office hours. Serve on departmental and college committees. Participate in continuing education and professional development activities. Perform other related faculty and administrative duties as assigned. Demonstrate skill, knowledge, and abilities in the teaching discipline. Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning. Make continuous efforts to advance the quality of instruction. Develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students who have differing educational and experiential backgrounds in meeting the course outcomes. Teach assigned courses in a variety of times and locations in response to institutional need. Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar. Teach assigned classes and laboratories according to the schedule. Provide students with a written and accessible course syllabus that follows the Course Syllabus Guidelines and facilitates a clear understanding between student and instructor of the content, goals, requirements, expectations, evaluation methods and schedule of work. Hold scheduled, posted virtual or physical office hours of at least one (1) hour daily and be available for and encourage conferences with students so there is a clearer understanding of the students' work and the possibility of improvement. Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course outcomes within the College grade and grade appeals procedures. Review, evaluate, recommend, and effectively use student learning materials. Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community. Review, evaluate, and revise assessments of program and institutional student learning outcomes and program practices to bring about action plans devised to implement systemic improvement in programs and assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, and requirements of business/industry and higher education. Participate in the self- evaluation process. Establish goals and objectives which may include personal and professional development plans in consultation with the department chair. Maintain professional standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodology through professional development/engagement activities. Assist in academic advising of declared majors. Assist with marketing programs and recruiting students. Serve on committees. Accept special assignments occasionally. Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Ability to plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus/ outline provided to insure course content and objectives are met. Ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate diverse learning styles of students. Successful college teaching experience is required. Successful experience utilizing instructional technologies, including computers, internet resources and other appropriate media in instruction. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English. Preferred Qualifications Combination of the following: -Knowledge of current writing theory and practice, especially regarding developmental English -Qualified to teach developmental English and Reading. (Bachelor's degree in English, English education, or related fields (esp. reading) and 1 academic year (2 semesters) teaching English full-time in a middle or secondary school or 30 semester credit hours external to Del Mar College teaching developmental English. 6 hours of graduate work in courses directly related to the teaching of adult learners will also qualify). - Experience teaching college level online courses and/or documented successful training in a college online learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) Special Instructions to Applicants This is a security-sensitive position.
