Job Description

Nature of Work This position involves semi-skilled and manual work in the operation and maintenance of the Town's recycling center and transfer station. The employee is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility, including processing refuse and recyclables, coordinating disposal and transfer activities, performing inspections, and ensuring compliance with established procedures and safety regulations. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Transfer Station Manager and/or Select Board and is reviewed through observation and results achieved. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Examples of work, not intended to be all-inclusive) Open and close the facility according to the established schedule Inspect all incoming waste and recyclables; direct users to proper disposal and recycling areas Verify appropriate permits/stickers and monitor loads for prohibited materials Operate and monitor equipment, including compactors and other facility machinery Perform routine maintenance and report mechanical issues as needed Coordinate container swaps and monitor capacity levels Oversee and enforce proper separation of waste and recyclables Educate residents, businesses, and property owners on proper disposal and recycling practices Maintain cleanliness of the facility; pick up litter and debris as needed Collect, process, and maintain accurate records of fees and transactions Understand and apply fee structures for bulky waste (C&D), metal, tires, appliances, demolition materials, and other items according to the fee schedule Operate and manage the burn pile in accordance with regulations; obtaining authorization from the Fire Chief prior to burning Assist with snow removal around dumpsters, buildings, and access areas Operate and maintain fire suppression equipment Ensure all safety procedures are followed and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used Perform related duties as assigned Requirements of Work Ability to operate facility equipment safely, including compactors and related machinery Knowledge of safety practices, hazards, and applicable regulations related to solid waste operations Ability to determine proper separation and disposal of materials Ability to identify equipment maintenance needs Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to understand and follow oral instructions Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public and Town employees Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting (up to 50 pounds or more) Ability to perform basic math functions Ability to handle money and maintain accurate records Training and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Experience operating moderately heavy motorized equipment preferred Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge and abilities Must complete and pass required safety training prior to or shortly after employment Necessary Special Requirements Physical strength, stamina, and agility sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position
Pay:
$16.00 - $20.00 per hour
