Job Description Position:

As set by the Board of Education Summary Description Under general supervision, operates a bus and is responsible for student and passenger transportation, safety, and discipline during regularly scheduled routes or on a specific trip basis. Performs other duties as required. Duties and Responsibilities Operates diesel vehicle either on a regularly scheduled route or on a specific trip basis to transport students, passengers, personnel, materials, and/or equipment. Follows assigned schedules and routes; picks up students/passengers at designed stops; directs the loading and unloading of vehicle. Transports students/passengers to and from school; supervises the behavior of all passengers aboard vehicle to maintain safet6y and discipline; drives defensively, following safe-driving practices an state and local laws; administers first aide as needed; keeps passenger posters, trip and mileage records and logs. May transport students/passengers to and from special activities such as field trips and athletic events. Remains current on disciplinary and safety practices and procedures by attending meetings, training, and safety programs. Performs vehicle safety inspections before departures following established procedures; cleans and maintains bus interiors daily. Reports delays, accidents, and unsafe road conditions.
Employment Standards Education/Experience:
Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be: Equivalent to high school diploma Six (6) months to (1) year of related experience that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the class Complete District driving and safety course prior to employment
Knowledge of:
Reading, writing, basic math and verbal communications; laws, rules, regulations, and practices of automotive operations and safety, especially as pertaining to school vehicle operations; basic first aid, state and local traffic laws and regulations.
Skill at:
Operating automatic transmission vehicles; administering basic first aid; applying defensive driving principles and driving safely; following oral and written instruction; using appropriate judgment in meeting unforeseen circumstances or bad weather conditions; dealing effectively with and supervising students and passengers; lifting and carrying heavy objects. Licenses/Certificates The district will bear the cost of a valid school bus drivers' endorsement in the State of Illinois. Conditions of Employment The law requires that the employee pass a State Department of Motor Vehicles physical. The District shall bear the cost of the physical. The employee must also possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
