Overview Join our dynamic team as a Bus Driver for the Head Start program, where your role is vital in providing safe, reliable transportation for young children and their families. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact on early childhood education by ensuring children arrive at their destinations securely and on time. As a dedicated bus driver, you will operate specialized vehicles designed for young passengers, including wheelchair-accessible buses, while adhering to all safety and traffic regulations. Your enthusiasm and professionalism will help foster a welcoming environment for children, parents, and staff alike. Duties Safely operate school buses and transit vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws, transportation safety regulations, and school policies. Transport children to and from Head Start centers, ensuring punctuality and safety during every trip. Assist children with boarding and disembarking, including providing wheelchair assistance and supporting children with special needs. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure mechanical safety and cleanliness; report any maintenance issues promptly. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR, first aid, emergency stop procedures, and vehicle codes. Maintain accurate logs of routes, passenger counts, and safety checks; complete incident reports when necessary. Foster positive behavior management by promoting respectful interactions among passengers and addressing minor behavioral issues professionally. Skills Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit bus operation with a strong understanding of driving techniques for heavy vehicles. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws. Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes and emergency situations with calmness and decisiveness. Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus to assist diverse communities. Childcare experience or familiarity with student discipline strategies to ensure passenger safety and well-being. Mechanical knowledge for basic vehicle troubleshooting; ability to perform routine maintenance checks. Strong customer service skills combined with a friendly demeanor that promotes a positive experience for children and families. Physical ability to lift heavy objects when needed and assist children with mobility challenges; comfort working in various weather conditions.
