Job Description

Leland Public School is a small rural school nestled in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We are a vibrant community that relishes close relationships among our staff, students, and the community. Our historically strong academic success is rooted in an International Baccalaureate curriculum and a tradition of high expectations for our students, a personalized approach to programming, and the commitment of a dedicated, professional, and nurturing staff. We are actively recruiting exceptional employees and are looking for "best fit" individuals to join our community. The Bus Driver Substitute is on-call and is responsible for the safe operation and control of district buses and assigned vehicles in the transportation of students to and from school, athletic contests, field trips, and any other school-sponsored activities. The Bus Driver Substitute reports to the Director of Transportation.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required Valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License Student-centered Possess good habits, character, and attendance records Discrete and able to maintain confidentiality in all matters related to the school Ability to be on-call, as needed to cover for illnesses, vacations, etc.
Required Duties:
Use established routes and designated bus stops Operate bus on approved time schedules Instruct student riders in regarding to being responsible passengers and following rules and regulations regarding applicable ridership privileges Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather Drive with safety of students a first priority Establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, students, parents, and administrators Exhibit positive image as loyal representative of the school district Demonstrate knowledge of state laws and local ordinances Be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles, and irregular special requests by parents and riders Be knowledgeable regarding district procedures and guidelines regarding transportation Each driver will conduct a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle prior to every trip as per state law with the expectation of emergency situations that may require the bus mechanic to do so Report bus accidents and pupil injuries to the Transportation Director and authorities both verbally and in written form with documents provided for that purpose Conduct emergency evacuation drills, the first by established Count Day, and then two additional by the end of the school year Report personal absences in time to secure another driver Perform housekeeping inside and outside of assigned vehicle Fill fuel tank Report all bus defects in writing to the head mechanic and Transportation Director using form designed for that purpose Demonstrate knowledge of rules and regulations promulgated by local, state, and federal authorities. Deal with exuberant behavior characteristics of youthful riders, report chronic violations of rules and procedures for the safe transportation of students to B building Principal and Transportation Director, utilizing established procedures Attendance at student disciplinary meeting with 24 hours advance notice when requested by the Building Principal Report any possible safety problems concerning the bus route to the
Transportation Director Expectations:
The Bus Driver Substitute is expected to comply with District policies. The Bus Driver Substitute is expected to follow the same code of conduct that applies to teachers and other staff members. An appropriate use of language and dress is expected at all times. Alcoholic beverages or use of mood altering substances are prohibited. The Bus Driver Substitute is expected to perform any other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.
