Job Description

POSITION TITLE
Bus Driver
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
9 months
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, a bus driver provides safe and efficient transportation of school-aged students to and from school while obeying all traffic laws pertaining to highway safety.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1.Performs pre and post inspection activities including, but not limited to, mechanical defects, adequate fuel levels, items left on the bus, vandalism to the bus interior, and to ensure all students have exited the vehicle by the end of the route. 2.Drives assigned route(s) in accordance with provided routing documentation, schedules, and timelines. 3.Document all discipline problems and turns them into the principal or assistant principal at the assigned schools. 4.Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses, including clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency. 5.Effectively communicates with supervision, i.e. Transportation Manager, in the event of an incident/accident involving the health and safety of riders.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
List most important duties first 1.Accurately maintain records, as required by state or federal laws, and Union County Board of Education policies, and/or school-based requests, and adhere to confidentiality requirements of state and federal law. 2.Understand and follow the individual health plan (IHP) of all students assigned to the bus. 3.Ensure that the safety monitor secures all disabled students with seat belts, harnesses, or that wheelchairs are properly secured before the bus begins movement. 4.Develop and utilize a seat assignment chart for students. 5.Accurately prepare reports, i.e. student counts, and other documentation as requested by the supervisor. 6.Establish behavior expectations of students such as, but not limited to, remaining seated, keeping hands/arms/heads inside of the bus, keeping aisles clear in the event of an emergency. 7.Report any mechanical issues on the TD-28 report daily and/or to the garage. 8.Maintain the cleanliness of the bus daily. 9.Effectively produce professionally written correspondence across various communication mediums, i.e. cell phone, computer. 10.Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
  • Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the N.
C. General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.

  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and/or group.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
  • Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing in stressful and emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Minimum Qualifications Desirable Qualifications
  • Eighteen (18) years of age
  • Clean Driving Record
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain an North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) with both School Bus "S" and passenger "P" endorsements
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
Sedentary/Medium - Exert force 10-25 lbs., frequently; and up to 10 lbs., constantly; or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Physical Demands:
Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
Vision:
Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision to read printed materials, a VDT screen, or other monitoring devices.
