I am a 33-year-old young woman with cerebral palsy residing in Nassau County, NY. I am nonambulatory and dependent on a power wheelchair full-time. I am seeking a reliable, pleasant, and mature assistant age 18+ to facilitate my participation in social events, help me attend classes and medical appointments, and provide respite to my parents. I am cognizant, self-directing, and fun-loving, with an eagerness to be out and about. As a trained social worker, I have many interests, including advocacy, progressive politics, reading, going to restaurants, and enjoying the company of my small dog. Successful applicants should be both willing to go out in the community and comfortable with downtime while I work on projects at home. You must be able and willing to assist with a small amount of personal care and lifting, mainly for toileting and doctor's visits. This is a Medicaid-funded position using self-directed waiver program dollars, but my workers should think of me as the employer. Applicants must be available 2-3 days per week (14-20 hours), with mandatory afternoon and evening hours. Shifts typically begin at 11am or 12pm and finish at 6pm or 7pm (negotiable).
