Grand River Navigation Company seeks a Great Lakes Master to command U.S.-flag bulk carriers transporting limestone, coal, iron ore, and salt. The Master will lead safe navigation, cargo operations, and crew management while upholding a strict safety-first culture. Responsibilities include voyage planning, regulatory compliance, drills, inspections, and close coordination with shore-based logistics. Responsibilities Command Great Lakes bulk carrier vessels for safe, compliant operations Plan and oversee voyages, navigation, and cargo loading/unloading Lead and supervise deck and engine crews, ensuring performance and discipline Enforce safety, environmental, and regulatory standards (USCG, company policies) Coordinate with shore-side logistics and dispatch for efficient scheduling Conduct drills, inspections, and preventive risk management activities Maintain vessel logs, reports, and documentation with high accuracy Support crew training, mentoring, and continuous improvement initiatives Required Skills Marine navigation and shiphandling Voyage planning and chartwork Cargo loading and stability management Maritime safety management systems Knowledge of USCG and maritime regulations Crew leadership and personnel management Radio and marine communications Emergency response and incident management Maintenance and inspection oversight Maritime documentation and recordkeeping
