SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Safely and efficiently load and offload containers, trucks, and railcars on NC Ports general cargo terminal. Operate various cargo handling equipment to fulfill customer needs and requests.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Load and unload containers, trucks, or railcars in a safe an efficient manner as instructed by departmental leadership Participate in recouping activities, relocation of cargo, manual labor, or other special work assignments as required Assist the cargo supervisors and team leaders in the verification of cargo and identification of damaged units as instructed Operate all cargo handling equipment (such as large industrial forklifts, container handlers/reach stackers, yard trucks, etc.) as required to accomplish cargo movements safely and effectively Responsible for clearing work areas of debris as it is generated Must possess knowledge of repetitive container, truck, and railcar loading patterns as well as cargo-specific stow patterns for effective warehousing/storage Perform physical inventories and investigate discrepancies, as required Perform equipment inspections or warehouse inspections, as required Participate in vessel operations, as assigned Work overtime as assigned, including nights, weekends, and holidays All other duties as assigned by management
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
High School Diploma or equivalent is required 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment is required Must be able to read and understand instructions, perform basic math, be able to write simple sentences or a series of names or numbers, and distinguish between cargo marks Continuous attention to detail while operating machinery is required Must follow all safety guidelines including wearing personal protective equipment Must have a valid driver's license and meet TWIC security requirements
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
Working time will be spent approximately equally between indoors and outdoors; must be physically able to withstand extreme cold and extreme heat for periods of more than one hour. At times, individual may be exposed to inclement weather, refrigerated environments, loud noise from machinery, proximity to machinery in operation, and fumes/odors from products that are handled at the Port. Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and climb on and off equipment and/or climb ladders on railcars and buildings. Must be able to alternate between sitting and standing positions for prolonged periods.
