StrikeLines is in need of a USCG licensed boat captain to operate our sonar survey boat during multi-day cruises in the Gulf of Mexico. The job involves running a 53-foot Hatteras sportfish while towing professional sonar equipment on a cable behind the boat. Crew members are responsible for navigating the boat from the dock to the survey area, deploying the sonar towfish, and running a programmed survey grid. We run a two-man crew with a captain and a deckhand/sonar technician. Crew members typically take shifts at the helm, with one resting while the other keeps watch. The typical cruise length is 24 to 72 hours. While offshore, we scan 24 hours a day until the survey is complete. We are based in Pensacola, Fla., and we primarily survey in the Gulf of Mexico within 60 miles of shore. We occasionally travel to South Florida or the East Coast for special survey projects. We can only survey when seas are less than 3 feet. So the survey crew is frequently on standby, waiting for a weather window to complete a project. It is common to only have 2 days notice before heading out on a multi-day trip. A flexible schedule is a must for this position. Pay is negotiable and based on experience and reliability.
A qualified candidate should:
Have experience running 50-foot or larger boats off shore commercially. Be comfortable operating at night and in poor weather conditions. Be comfortable sleeping and working on a boat while underway. Be available to spend 2-4 days offshore without returning to land. Have experience operating and maintaining inboard diesel vessels. Be comfortable using radar, autopilot, and GPS navigation equipment. Be able to lift 100 pounds. Have basic computer skills. This is an easy job for experienced mariners who are comfortable offshore. The most challenging issues are cruise length and inconsistent schedule due to weather.
