ABOUT CACTUS PIPELINE CONTRACTORS
Cactus Pipeline Contractors is a Mesa, Arizona-based wet utility contractor specializing in underground utility construction throughout the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. We install and maintain water mains, sewer lines, storm drain infrastructure, and related underground systems for municipal, commercial, and residential clients across Maricopa and Pinal counties. Our drivers are a critical part of every project — keeping materials moving, job sites supplied, and equipment where it needs to be, on time and without incident.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Class A CDL Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of company dump trucks and related equipment to support active wet utility construction projects across the Phoenix metro area. This role requires both solo driving (no trailer) for hauling construction materials, soil, aggregate, and debris, as well as combination vehicle operation — truck with trailer — for transporting heavy equipment and pipe materials to and from job sites. This is a full-time field position performed in Arizona's extreme desert climate. Drivers must be comfortable operating in high-heat summer conditions, navigating active construction zones, and adapting to daily shifting needs across multiple project sites. A clean driving record, current Class A CDL with no restrictions, and a professional, team-first attitude are non-negotiable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Dump Truck Operation — Solo (No Trailer) Operate company dump trucks to haul construction materials including aggregate base, crushed rock, sand, select fill, and concrete debris to and from job sites throughout the Phoenix metro area Transport spoils, excavated material, and demolition debris from active construction sites to designated disposal or recycling facilities Deliver pipe materials, fittings, and miscellaneous wet utility supplies from supply yards and vendors directly to field crews Perform tailgate and dump bed operations safely, ensuring proper load distribution and secure material containment during transit Coordinate with field superintendent and foremen on daily delivery schedules, load quantities, and material priorities Combination Vehicle Operation — Truck with Trailer Operate truck and trailer combinations to transport heavy construction equipment including excavators, compactors, skid steers, and other wet utility machinery between the company yard and active job sites Haul pipe — including large-diameter water main, sewer pipe, storm drain pipe, and related materials — on flatbed or pipe trailers in compliance with Arizona DOT load requirements Hook, unhook, and safely position trailers; perform all pre- and post-trip coupling inspections Secure all loads with appropriate chains, binders, straps, and blocking per FMCSA and company requirements — no load moves until it is verified secure Navigate oversized or permitted loads in compliance with Arizona permit conditions, including route restrictions, travel time windows, and escort requirements when applicable Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on all assigned vehicles and trailers per FMCSA regulations and company policy; document and report any defects immediately Monitor fluid levels, tire condition, brake function, lighting, and coupling hardware daily Keep assigned vehicle clean, fueled, and operationally ready at the start of each shift Communicate any mechanical issues, warning lights, or equipment concerns to the superintendent and fleet manager promptly — do not operate a vehicle in an unsafe condition Assist with minor field maintenance tasks and support field crews as directed when not actively driving Safety & Compliance Operate all vehicles in strict compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, Arizona DOT requirements, and all applicable federal, state, and local traffic laws Maintain current medical examiner's certificate (DOT physical) and ensure all CDL endorsements remain valid and up to date Comply with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations; accurately maintain electronic logging device (ELD) records as required Follow all company safety policies, job site traffic control plans, and flagging/spotter direction when operating in active construction zones Adhere to ADOSH (Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health) heat illness prevention standards during all outdoor loading, unloading, and site activities Report all accidents, incidents, near-misses, or traffic violations — no matter how minor — to the superintendent and safety coordinator immediately Participate in pre-shift tailgate safety meetings and company safety training as required Zero tolerance for cell phone use while driving; hands-free device required if communication is necessary
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) — current, unrestricted, and in good standing with the Arizona MVD Minimum 2 years of verifiable Class A CDL driving experience, preferably in construction, heavy haul, or aggregate and material hauling Clean MVD driving record — no DUI/DWI convictions, no more than 1 moving violation in the past 3 years, no at-fault accidents in the past 3 years Current DOT medical examiner's certificate (or ability to obtain prior to first day) Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks (solo, no trailer) for material hauling and spoils removal Demonstrated experience operating truck and trailer combinations for equipment transport and flatbed/pipe hauling Thorough knowledge of FMCSA regulations, HOS rules, and ELD requirements Proficiency with pre-trip/post-trip inspection procedures and documentation Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and background check Ability to pass a road skills test and vehicle inspection evaluation as part of the hiring process Preferred Qualifications Experience hauling construction equipment — excavators, skid steers, compactors — on lowboy or equipment trailers Experience delivering pipe and utility materials on flatbed trailers, including proper blocking and securing of pipe bundles Familiarity with Phoenix metro area roadways, construction corridors, and ADOT-managed routes Experience working in active construction zones and following traffic control plans Hazmat endorsement a plus (not required) Forklift or telehandler experience helpful for yard material handling Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ARIZONA HEAT STANDARDS
While the majority of this role is performed in the cab of a vehicle, drivers are expected to perform hands-on physical work during loading, unloading, load securement, and vehicle inspection activities — all conducted outdoors in Arizona's extreme desert climate. Physical Demands Climb in and out of truck cab and trailer multiple times per shift — cab access typically requires 3-5 steps and significant use of grab handles Walk job sites, vendor yards, and disposal facilities as needed — including on uneven terrain, gravel, and compacted soil in direct sun and temperatures exceeding 110°F Lift, carry, and position load securement equipment including chains, binders, straps, and blocking materials weighing up to 75 lbs Operate hand tools, tarps, and tailgate mechanisms that require significant grip strength and physical effort Stand and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections on full vehicle and trailer combination — typically 20-30 minutes of walking and physical inspection per cycle Maintain balance and footing while working on and around trailer decks, truck beds, and loading areas Physically walk job sites to coordinate loads, spot equipment placement, and communicate with field crews — up to 1-2 miles of walking per day across active construction environments Arizona Heat & Environmental Conditions Ability to perform outdoor physical tasks — load securement, vehicle inspections, loading and unloading — in ambient temperatures of 100°F-115°F+ during Arizona summer months Must stay properly hydrated throughout the shift; company requires a minimum of 1 quart of water per hour during summer months for all outdoor activity Comply with all company heat illness prevention protocols including mandatory shade breaks during outdoor loading/unloading activities in peak heat Recognize and report heat illness symptoms in yourself or co-workers immediately; heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious medical emergencies on Arizona job sites Exposure to direct sun, dust, diesel exhaust, construction noise, and vibration throughout the workday Early morning start times during summer months — shifts may begin as early as 4:30-5:00 AM to complete the most heat-intensive loading and hauling before peak afternoon temperatures Vision & Cognitive Requirements Sufficient vision to operate commercial vehicles safely, read load securement equipment, and navigate construction zones — corrective lenses permitted if noted on CDL Ability to maintain focus and alertness during repetitive highway and local driving across long shifts Sufficient spatial awareness and depth perception to back trailers, maneuver in confined job site areas, and position equipment for unloading
SCHEDULE & WORK CONDITIONS
Full-time, Monday through Friday with overtime and occasional Saturday work as project demands require Summer shifts typically begin between 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM; schedule flexibility and early-morning availability are required Daily dispatch from the company yard in Mesa, Arizona with routes throughout the Greater Phoenix Metro Area including Maricopa and Pinal counties Must report to the yard on time daily; reliable personal transportation to the Mesa yard is required This is a local/regional driving position — drivers are home every night; no over-the-road (OTR) travel Overtime is common during active project phases; consistent availability and reliability are essential
