Job Description

GENERAL DEFINITION
Performs responsible skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment. Primary responsibility is collecting and transporting trash to the Landfill. Cleaning up around the collection sites and washing trucks.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed under regular supervision of the Assistant Director of Solid Waste Services or designee.
TYPICAL TASKS
Operates refuse collection vehicle; Operates roll-off truck; Maintains assigned vehicles in good working order; Conducts daily maintenance check of equipment, makes adjustments as needed; Cleans up refuse around garbage containers; Returns garbage containers to County for painting; Washes trucks; Identifies and reports maintenance screening and beautification work needed at collection sites. Works landfill or collection routes as assigned. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy refuse collections; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary; skill and care in the operation of specialized equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school with considerable experience in operation of trash collection vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL)-Class B with Air Brakes or Class A. Subject to substance screening by the County. The successful applicant will possess and maintain a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Note:
Applicant must have and maintain a driving record acceptable to Franklin County and its insurance carrier(s). Random drug testing required for the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to occasionally lift at least 75 pounds. Climb stairs, walk, stoop, bend and easily move head from side to side.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is generally performed in the cab of a truck and in the outside environment. Environment is dusty and somewhat foul smelling.

$33,827.00 - $43,975.00 per year
