The Safety Superintendent is responsible for compliance, job site audits, program development, and working closely with labor and management to reduce injuries and damages. Jones Stevedoring Company is an industry leader handling breakbulk cargo throughout the Pacific Northwest. This work is performed under our management by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. This position is based out of Portland, OR, but covers operations throughout Washington and Oregon ports. A background in safety and/or stevedoring operations is preferred, but we are willing to train the right person. Safety Superintendent Job Description 1. Administrative a. Compliance i.
OSHA/DOSH
ii. PCMSC iii. Gear certification b. Internal Reporting i. Weekly reporting to executives. ii. Regular communication to operations staff. c. Accident reports and statistics i. Process and document accident reports. ii. Compile relevant statistics to report to company. 2. Program Development a. Initiate and maintain projects, programs, and goals for specific commodities/ports. b. Work with managers to implement measureable and targeted programs to reduce injuries and damages. 3. Labor Relations 4. Technical a. Understand cranes and gear. i. Certification requirements. ii. Inspection requirements. iii. Removal from service requirements. b. Cargo Characteristics i. Understand how each cargo is handled. ii. Special rigging. iii. Health and safety hazards of each cargo. c. Rigging 5. Site visits and support a. Frequent visits to operations. b. Being on-site for critical operations. 6. Auditing a. Regular audits of operations and facilities. i. Ship audits ii. Facilities audits Skills & Experience Ideal candidates will have skills and experience in many of the following areas: Logistics and / or maritime industry Lifting gear and rigging concepts Heavy equipment Microsoft Excel & Word (or similar) Intermediate math Union labor relations
Other Requirements:
Eligible candidates must: Be willing and able to travel to various seaport locations from Everett to Portland on occasion Own a reliable vehicle and possess a valid, state issued driver's license (mileage for travel outside of area is reimbursed) Be willing and able to work outdoors, day and night, weekends and weekdays, in all weather conditions Be able to climb ladders, stairs, ship's gangways Offers of employment are contingent on the candidate's ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening. Offers of employment are contingent on the candidate's ability to secure a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. TWIC applicants are subject to a criminal history check.
