Job Summary The Hadley COA van driver drives the Council's wheelchair accessible van, picks up passengers (Hadley residents who are 60 and older), drops them off to various destinations in Hadley, Amherst, Northampton, and Hatfield, and provides return trips home. Qualified drivers must complete a series of MA Dept. of Transportation courses (offered online and in person), be certified in CPR and First Aid, and pass a CORI background check. Drivers must be comfortable using a hands-free, mounted smart phone to be in communication with the HCOA transportation coordinator, be willing to help passengers use the wheelchair lift to board the van when needed, and be willing to help those passengers who need it buckle into their seats and secure their wheelchairs. Responsibilities Safely operates the Council wheelchair accessible van along designated local routes, adhering strictly to traffic laws and transportation regulations. Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, providing courteous support to individuals with mobility challenges or special needs. Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles, checking for maintenance issues, fluid levels, tire pressure, and overall safety readiness. Maintain accurate logs of trips, passenger counts, mileage, and any incidents or delays during shifts. Communicate effectively with clients regarding schedules, route changes, or delays using clear verbal communication skills. Ensure vehicles are kept clean and well-maintained; report any mechanical issues promptly for repairs. Follow all safety protocols related to medical transportation services and passenger vehicle operation to guarantee a secure environment for riders. Experience Prior delivery driver experience or shuttle driving experience is highly valued. Experience operating various types of passenger vehicles such as vans, limousines, or chauffeur-driven cars is preferred. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems for efficient route planning and real-time navigation is essential. Knowledge of local driving routes combined with adherence to state transportation regulations ensures smooth operations. Demonstrated ability to handle heavy lifting when assisting passengers or loading equipment safely. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse clients. Experience in medical transportation or paratransit services is a plus but not required; training will be provided if needed.
