Duties Safely operate school vans and transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations. Pick up and drop off students at designated locations while adhering to scheduled routes and timeframes. Assist students with special needs, including wheelchair assistance and other mobility support, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout transit. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation, including CPR, first aid, emergency stop procedures, and handling unexpected incidents on the road. Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers to coordinate pickups, drop-offs, route changes, or delays. Conduct vehicle inspections before each shift to ensure mechanical safety and cleanliness; report any issues promptly for maintenance. Maintain accurate logs of routes traveled, student counts, incidents, and vehicle condition reports to ensure compliance with all safety standards. Requirements Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; commercial driver's license (CDL) preferred but not mandatory depending on jurisdiction. Proven experience in bus driving or school van operation; familiarity with transit bus operation or paratransit services is advantageous. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws. Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting students or handling equipment; physically capable of long periods of driving and standing. Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for engaging diverse communities. Experience working with children or in childcare settings; understanding student behavior management is beneficial. Certifications in first aid, CPR, defensive driving, emergency response procedures for transportation are highly desirable. Mechanical knowledge of vehicle systems for basic troubleshooting; ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or mechanical issues.
