Job Description
Underground Utilities Superintendent (Water)Position Overview The Underground Utilities Superintendent (Water) will lead and oversee field construction activities for water and associated wet utilities. This role is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating crews and subcontractors to install, repair, and maintain water distribution systems, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and to specification. The superintendent acts as the primary on-site leader, liaising with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and clients to resolve issues, maintain quality control, and meet regulatory and environmental requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupervise and coordinate daily field operations for water and wet utility installations, including trenching, pipe laying, valve and hydrant installation, service connections, and backfilling.
Ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, safety standards, and local regulations; enforce safety programs and conduct toolbox talks and site inspections.
Plan and sequence work to meet project schedules; allocate crews, equipment, and materials efficiently and adjust resources to address delays or unexpected conditions.
Inspect workmanship and materials for quality and adherence to drawings and utility standards; document non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, surveyors, inspectors, and client representatives to resolve technical issues, obtain permits, and schedule inspections.
Manage subcontractors on site, monitor performance, review daily reports, and ensure subcontract work is integrated with overall project activities.
Oversee site logistics, traffic control, erosion and sediment control measures, and restoration of surfaces following construction.
Maintain accurate daily logs, progress reports, materials usage records, and prepare input for progress billing and change order documentation.
Mentor and train foremen and crew leads on best practices for wet utilities construction and safe work methods.
Respond to emergency repair requests and troubleshoot field problems to restore water service or mitigate hazards promptly.
Qualifications5+ years of progressive experience in underground utilities construction with at least 2 years in a superintendent or senior field leadership role, preferably focused on water distribution (wet utilities).Proven knowledge of water system construction practices: pipe types and joining methods, bedding and backfill requirements, valves, hydrants, fittings, and service connections.
Strong understanding of safety regulations (OSHA/Provincial equivalents), trenching and shoring, confined space entry, and erosion and sediment control.
Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and as-built documentation; ability to perform field measurements and coordinate layout with surveyors.
Excellent leadership and communication skills; capable of coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders on site.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to make timely, site-based decisions under pressure.
Familiarity with permitting processes, utility locates, and coordination with municipalities and utility companies.
Valid drivers license and ability to travel to multiple job sites; certifications such as First Aid/CPR, confined space, or heavy equipment operator tickets are an asset.
Experience with project reporting tools, Microsoft Office, and mobile field reporting apps is preferred.
