Job Description

The Unit Secretary performs clerical duties in the nursing unit, including requisitioning supplies, transcribing orders, maintaining charts, and completing related tasks. This role also includes receptionist responsibilities and assisting nursing staff and physicians with special assignments. In addition, the Unit Secretary is responsible for maintaining positive public relations. A cheerful and positive attitude toward patients, visitors, and coworkers is essential. The Unit Secretary must be courteous, understanding, and able to work closely with other members of the Nursing Service and on-call departments. Responsibilities also include compiling data related to acuity, census, admissions, discharges, and reporting information to the Director of Nursing (DON). The Unit Secretary assumes Business Office functions when the office is closed, monitors telemetry, and notifies the Charge Nurse of alarms. Strong communication skills are required. The Unit Secretary may also assist with nursing duties in an age-appropriate manner as needed.
