Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Level 1

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION.

The Treatment Plant Operator Level 1 at the Wastewater Department is responsible for operating and maintenance tasks essential to the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Operate pumps to transfer sludge and wastewater. Clean, maintain, and assist in repair of WWTP equipment such as pumps, gear reducers, and compressors. Maintain the grounds of the WWTP facility and operate and service lawn equipment. Plow/remove snow. Operate a fork truck/hoist. Complete assigned work orders in a timely manner. Monitor and operate the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations utilizing the operator station computer. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by a supervisor. Answer phone complaints and dispatch WWTP personnel. Multiple required visits to all areas of the WWTP facility per shift. Be able to complete operational forms/logs. CDL preferred but not required. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by a Supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate one-on-one in small groups situations to customers and other employees of the City. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Be able to use measuring devices ruler, gauges, drawing and interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the WWTP Operator is regularly required to walk, stand and sit for long periods of time. The employee should have good hand mobility. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, climb, balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl for long periods of time, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must have specific vision abilities to identify and distinguish colors. The employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, biological, caustic, toxic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. This job requires outside work during all times of the year. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid, snowy, windy and slippery conditions, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electric shock, and vibration could occur. The noise level at times could be loud.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS

Computer skills, valid Driver's License. Ability to obtain Operator Level 1 WWTP Indiana State License within two years of hire date will increase hourly wage. Ability to work overtime in order to maintain operation of the WWTP. Electrical safety and machine guarding abilities. Basic computer skills.
