Permanent Duties and Responsibilities (Band A)
  • Assists in advising international students on basic immigration policies and regulations affecting curricular requirements and academic procedures.
  • Under the direction of a lead advisor, functions as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to support the university's compliance with federal regulations.
  • Performs entry-level data entry and record maintenance in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Assists students in navigating university resources to meet academic and career goals within the guidelines of their visa status.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of cultural and social adjustment programs, including orientation and mentoring activities.
  • Supports the preparation and delivery of immigration information sessions for student groups.
  • Contributes to the assessment of international students advising support programs and services.
  • Collects and organizes data to assist in the evaluation of international student advising policies and procedures.
  • Helps maintain and update office materials, resources, and legal information for the ISS website.
  • Drafts routine correspondence, brochures, and program descriptions for review by senior staff.
  • Provides support services to assigned colleges, schools, and administrative units on campus.
  • Provides administrative support for third-party sponsored students and sponsoring organizations.
  • Trains and monitors student assistants and interns.
  • Serves as a junior member on university committees or as a department representative at campus events. Other duties as assigned.
  • Denotes Essential Function Duties and Responsibilities (Band B)
  • Serves as International Student Advisor to advise international students on immigration policies and regulations directly affecting or affected by curricular requirements, academic options, policies and procedures.
  • Functions as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Department of State (DOS) respectively, to ensure the university's compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students and exchange visitors.
  • Utilizes the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) with specialized knowledge and expertise for the interpretation and application of complex federal regulations and academic policies and procedures.
  • Assists students in formulating and assessing academic and career goals as allowed within the guidelines of their visa status.
  • Plans, implements and participates in a wide range of international students cultural and social adjustment programs, including orientation and mentoring programs.
  • Prepares, develops, and presents immigration Information sessions for small groups and large audiences.
  • Collaborates in planning, implementing, managing, and assessing international students advising support programs and services.
  • Collaborates in the development and evaluation of international student advising policies and procedures.
  • Develops, reviews and maintains materials that communicate office services, programs, resources and legal information for ISS' website.
  • Writes a variety of correspondence, brochures, reports, program descriptions and proposals.
  • Serves as liaison to an assigned portfolio of colleges, schools, and departments, as well as other administrative units on campus.
  • Liaises with third-party sponsored students and sponsoring organizations.
  • Liaises with the state and federal agencies such as US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of State (DOS), Social Security Administrations (SSA), and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Trains and supervises staff, including student assistants and interns. Serves on university committees and as a resource to campus international education stakeholders. Advocate on behalf of international students at the university, state and national levels. Other duties as assigned.
  • Denotes Essential Functions Minimum Qualifications (Pay Band A) Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Arts and Humanities, Social Science, Science, Education, Higher Education Administration, and Business Administration, or related field and 1 year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student services or international education; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of student services or international education as demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with student services and/or international student advising. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of student services or international education. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, and video communication platforms (i.e. Zoom). Ability to guide and lead student assistants, manage work priorities, and maintain professional employee relations. Strong interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail. Ability to assist in the creation of brochures, handbooks, reports, or handouts. Ability to establish priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner. U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence (required by federal regulations for certification as a Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer for the Exchange Visitor Program). Clearance of a Criminal History Background Check to comply with Code of Federal Regulations required for employees functioning as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is a condition of employment and continued employment. Minimum Qualifications (Pay Band B) Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Arts and Humanities, Social Science, Science, Education, Higher Education Administration, and Business Administration, or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for international student advising in an institute of higher education; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of international student advising in an institute of higher education as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with international student advising in an institute of higher education. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, and video communication platforms (i.e. Zoom). If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Must have one (1) years a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) with SEVIS administrative functions and responsibilities. Demonstrated experience developing and managing cross-cultural adjustment programs or equivalent experience. Strong interpersonal communication skills and attention to details. Demonstrated ability to write brochures, handbooks, reports, or handouts. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. Demonstrated proficiency using the US DHS' Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Experience living, studying, or working abroad. Competency in a second language (other than English).
