Job Description
Job Overview Billing & Insurance / Checkout Specialist Responsible for handling patient checkout, insurance verification, billing, payment collection, and account follow-up in a busy optometry clinic. Provides excellent customer service while ensuring accurate insurance processing and patient account information. Key Responsibilities Check patients out after eye examinations and testing. Collect copayments, deductibles, coinsurance, and outstanding balances. Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits. Review insurance coverage for vision and medical services. Submit and process medical and vision insurance claims. Review claims for accuracy and correct billing errors or missing information. Post insurance payments, patient payments, adjustments, and denials accurately. Reconcile daily payments and prepare end-of-day reports. Follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims. Contact insurance companies regarding claim status, benefits, and payment issues. Explain patient statements, insurance benefits, and financial responsibilities. Maintain accurate patient demographic, insurance, and billing information. Schedule follow-up appointments and assist patients with referrals when needed. Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations. Work closely with doctors, technicians, front-desk staff, and billing teams to resolve account issues. Working with other clinics and doctors for referrals for specialty care. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in medical billing, insurance, or healthcare front-desk work preferred. Experience with medical/vision insurance and claims processing is a plus. Cash- handling experience is preferred. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication and customer-service skills. Ability to work accurately with payments, insurance information, and patient accounts. Knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy requirements. Comfortable using computers, electronic medical records (EMR), and billing software.
