Job Description

The Building Controls Specialist provides highly skilled technical support and program analysis for campus building automation systems and fire alarm systems. Responsibilities include installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of HVAC control systems, fire alarm panels, suppression systems, and related electronic components. The position ensures proper operation of building environmental systems and life safety systems through preventive maintenance, repairs, and system monitoring. Work is performed under general supervision, with a strong emphasis on customer service, safety, and collaboration with other trades.
Special Note:
We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship now or in the future. Perform journeyman-level work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC/R systems, building automation controls, and fire alarm systems by troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing inoperative parts and associated equipment. Ensure proper functioning of HVAC and life safety systems by maintaining, repairing, and modifying refrigerant systems, pumps, valves, air-moving equipment, local temperature/pressure controls, and fire alarm panels and suppression systems. Promote preventative maintenance by keeping accurate records and monitoring associated HVAC and fire alarm equipment for compliance and reliability. Coordinate and oversee contracted work, ensuring quality standards and timely completion of projects. Communicate effectively, work independently under minimal supervision, and maintain flexibility for urgent or emergencies while representing the university professionally.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree in HVAC/R Technology, Building Automation Systems, Instrumentation and Control systems, or a related field, or 5 years of verifiable experience of direct HVAC/R control systems experience. Three or more years' experience within the field of HVAC/R building controls. A valid driver's license.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or HVAC Engineering Technology HVAC Excellence Master Specialist Certification.
BAS Certification Key Competencies:
Knowledge of HVAC/R systems associated controls equipment, and microprocessor-based distribution control systems, including analog and pneumatic controls. Skill in interpreting wiring diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics; proficient in troubleshooting and repairing complex control systems. Ability to use Microsoft Office, email applications, and work within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Ability to lead, by example, maintain high ethical standards, and deliver exemplary customer service to faculty, staff, and students. Ability to work collaboratively with others, adapt to changing priorities, and respond effectively to urgent or emergencies.
Physical Requirements:
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combinations of climbing and balancing include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights, and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manually/electrically powered tools.
Job Conditions:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature, and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
