Grounds and Operations Manager Department:
Facilities & Maintenance Reports To:
Facilities Director SummaryThe Grounds and Operations Manager exercises independent discretion to direct the maintenance, safety, and daily execution of GMVS campus grounds, operational infrastructure, and vehicle fleet operations. While reporting directly to the Facilities Director, this position manages operational logistics, supervises facilities staff and external contractors, manages fleet compliance, and oversees preventive maintenance systems to ensure a safe, highly functional campus environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Fleet & Logistics Management Fleet Management:
Manage and oversee the preventive maintenance programs, compliance, licensing, and safety inspections for the entire GMVS vehicle fleet.
Vendor & Contract Oversight:
Negotiate terms, initiate contracts, and directly oversee external mechanics, service vendors, and automotive contractors.
Policy & Compliance:
Establish and enforce fleet usage policies, vehicle safety guidelines, and maintain comprehensive audit-ready records in accordance with State of Vermont and federal transport standards.
Grounds & Campus Operations Supervision Staff Management & Supervision:
Directly recruit, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate grounds personnel, seasonal staff, service credit programs, and external contractors.
Operations Planning:
Develop and execute long-term landscaping, campus beautification, and seasonal transition plans (including snow and ice management).
Discretionary Operational Decisions:
Autonomously assess weather conditions and emergency situations to prioritize work.
Facilities Oversight & Administrative Duties Budget & Resource Management:
Assist the Facilities Director and Director of Finance & Operations in drafting annual grounds and fleet budgets; authorize purchasing for parts, equipment, and contracted work within established discretionary limits.
Risk & Regulatory Compliance:
Conduct regular safety audits of equipment, facilities, shops, and grounds; ensure school adherence to OSHA, environmental safety, and State of Vermont building and environmental codes.
Qualifications & Competencies Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in facilities management, fleet management, grounds oversight, or complex campus operations.
Supervisory Skills:
Proven track record of managing staff, delegating work, evaluating performance, and overseeing contractor workflows.
Decision-Making Ability:
Strong record of exercising independent judgment on operational, financial, and safety decisions without direct supervision.
Technical & Administrative Proficiency:
Experience with facilities management systems, inventory tracking, and budget administration.
Licensure:
Valid driver's license required; relevant trade certifications or safety certifications desirable.
Work Schedule & Availability Schedule:
Full-time, exempt position. Standard schedule is set during regular business hours; however, position requires flexibility for early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Seasonal & Emergency Availability:
Must be available for mandatory on-call response during snow and ice events, severe weather emergencies, and key campus/athletics events requiring operational support.
Pay:
$50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
