Appointment Type Full Time Description Position Summary:
The Groundskeeper performs all aspects of operations related to grounds and landscaping profession including but not limited to, turf, hard surface maintenance, playground maintenance, snow removal, arboriculture, landscape design, fire extinguisher maintenance, customer service, and operation of equipment in a safe manor.

1. Performs all phases of installation, maintenance and repair of all grounds and landscapes in all district facilities and sites. 2. Execute all phases of turf management including mowing, edging, aeration, fertilizing, irrigation, seeding, pesticide use, and sodding of all district campuses and athletic sports fields. 3. Implements landscape management best practices with an emphasis on sustainability and ecological practices including in site designs, installations, planting, pruning, repairs and replacements. 4. Installs, maintains and repairs various types of playground equipment in accordance with all applicable safety and accessibility codes. 5. Performs snow removal activities as required, including plowing and salting operations. 6. Installs, repairs and maintains retaining walls, walkways and borders using masonry, wood and metal components. 7. Inspects, tests and repairs hand held fire extinguishers throughout the district facilities and vehicles. 8. Provides professional assistance to schools, PTA's, volunteers regarding best practices, location and types of plant material and equipment. 9. Performs concrete and bituminous surface repairs. 10. Repairs, replaces and installs multiple types of fencing. 11. Diagnoses and treats turf, tree and plant diseases and conditions. 12. Operates construction related equipment such as tractors, skid steer, lifts dump trucks and trailers 13. Insures that work areas are properly maintained. 14. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. 15. RUSD Strategic Plan Supervision Received:
Receives direction from the Grounds Foreman. The Groundskeeper normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.
Supervision Exercised:

Qualifications Knowledge of:
1. Pesticide application codes and regulations. 2. Laws and regulations governing planning, development, construction and modernization of school facilities. 3. Principles and practices of facility architecture, construction and engineering, structure design and construction project management. 4. Principles and practices of employee supervision, including work planning, assignment, review and evaluation, discipline, and the training of staff in work procedures. 5. Organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies, and operational needs. 6. Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility. 7. Basic principles and practices of budget development, administration, and accountability. 8. Recent and on-going developments, current literature, and sources of information related to the operations of the assigned programs. 9. Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment, and basic computer applications. 10. Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting. 11. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. 12. Techniques for effectively representing the district in contacts with governmental agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, educational, regulatory, and legislative organizations. 13. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service. 14. Occupational hazards and safe work practices. 15. Dealing with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner to not alienate or antagonize them. 16. Gathering, collating, or classifying information about data, people, or things. Reporting and/or carrying out a prescribed action or presenting alternative actions. 17. Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
Ability to:
1. Design, estimate and inspect projects. 2. Preform all duties in compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility 3. Interpret drawings, plans, blueprints and specifications for building and grounds projects, read, interpret and apply complex technical documentation, laws, policies, procedures, codes and regulations. 4. Prioritize, plan, and coordinate work to meet deadlines. 5. Analyze problems, identify solutions and implement recommendations in support of goals. 6. Recognize an emergency and take appropriate action. 7. Adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate. Think through the consequences of a decision prior to making it. 8. Motivate employees for peak performance and creative thinking regarding departmental operations. 9. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Requires tact, discretion and clarity when communicating. 10. Work independently and identify potentially more effective methods of work operation. 11. Operate a computer, tablet, and proprietary or variety of mass market software or applications
Education and Experience:
1. Associates degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture or related field from an accredited college or university. 2. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. 3. Five (5) years full-time experience in turf, herbaceous plant care, snow removal, tree care, foundation plantings, knowledge of maintaining sports fields in commercial, industrial or institutional setting or an equivalent combination. 4. Training in Landscape design related computer software desired.
Licenses and Certifications:
1. Must possess and maintain a valid WI Driver's License along with a good driving record. A good driving record is defined as zero moving violations (points) within the past 12 months. 2. Must maintain availability of a properly insured personal vehicle always. 3. Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of employment. 4. Fire Extinguisher Certification within 6 months of employment. 5. Six Sigma White Belt certification within six months of employment. 6. Blood Borne Pathogen and other RUSD required safety training (lead, asbestos, ALICE, etc.) within 12 months of employment. 7. RUSD supervisory certification within 12 months of employment. Work Environment:
1. Busy work environment with multiple priorities and frequent interruptions. Work includes a commitment to irregular working hours, when needed. 2. Position requires the availability for flexible shifts and additional hours as necessary and ability to be on call 24-hours a day, seven days a week when needed for district emergencies. 3. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; sitting for extended periods of time; walking; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; intermittent bending, stooping or reaching overhead to retrieve or store materials; driving a vehicle to conduct business activities. 4. Primarily an outdoor work environment, frequent travel between district sites is required with occasional out of town travel, with potential exposure to hazardous materials and construction equipment. 5. Job duties require working outdoors in adverse weather conditions. 6. Ability to work with a respirator if needed. 7. Employee must carry district provided cell phone in the execution of their job duties.
Physical Demands:
1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform using a full range of motions including standing, sitting, talking, hearing, and using hands and fingers to operate a computer and job-related equipment, intermittent bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling and reaching to execute job duties. 2. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds. 3. Ascending or descending ladders, scaffolding, ropes, poles and the like using feet/legs and/or hands/arms. 4. Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more. This is not just the ability to see a person or object, but the ability to recognize features as well. 5. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. 6. Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s). Entering text or data into a computer or other machine by means of a keyboard. 7. Complete heavy workload within established time frames. 8. Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., machinery alarms, medical codes/alarms). 9. Ability to work in confined spaces, mechanical areas where noise, heat and operating equipment are present. 10. Primarily an indoor work environment, but frequent travel between district sites is required with occasional out of town travel, with potential exposure to hazardous materials and construction equipment. 11.
