Job Overview The Architectural Job Captain is responsible for coordinating and managing architectural projects through design development, construction documentation, permitting, and construction coordination. This role serves as a key point of communication between clients, consultants, contractors, jurisdictional agencies, and internal design teams to ensure projects remain organized, technically accurate, code-compliant, and on schedule. The position combines architectural design and documentation with project coordination and team leadership. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing construction documents, coordinating consultant information, managing project schedules and deliverables, responding to plan check comments, supporting permitting efforts, and assisting with construction-phase coordination. Key Responsibilities Lead the development, coordination, and quality control of architectural construction documents, plans, details, and project documentation using AutoCAD and other design software. Coordinate projects through multiple phases, including schematic design, design development, construction documentation, permitting, and construction administration. Manage project schedules, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables to ensure projects progress efficiently and meet internal and client expectations. Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, vendors, and other project stakeholders to incorporate technical requirements and resolve design or construction-related issues. Review architectural drawings and consultant documents for accuracy, consistency, constructability, and coordination prior to submittal or issuance. Perform building code and zoning research and assist with ensuring projects comply with applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, jurisdictional regulations, and permitting requirements. Prepare, coordinate, and track permit submittals, plan check corrections, resubmittals, and agency approvals through permit issuance. Communicate directly with city reviewers and jurisdictional agencies to clarify requirements, address comments, and help move projects through the approval process. Serve as a primary point of contact for clients by providing project updates, coordinating design decisions, discussing project requirements, and helping manage expectations throughout the project lifecycle. Coordinate and oversee work produced by junior designers, drafters, and project team members, providing direction, reviewing deliverables, and maintaining project quality standards. Assist with project budgeting, preliminary construction estimates, proposals, scope development, and coordination of consultant and contractor pricing. Support contractor bidding and construction coordination by responding to project questions, reviewing field conditions, coordinating design revisions, and assisting with the resolution of construction-related issues. Participate in client meetings, consultant coordination meetings, site visits, and internal project meetings to document decisions and identify required follow-up items. Coordinate architectural design with interior design, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy, and other consultant disciplines as required by each project. Maintain organized project records, drawings, correspondence, approvals, and documentation throughout the project lifecycle. Support project leadership in delivering projects from initial design and planning through permitting and construction while maintaining design intent, technical quality, schedule, and budget. Experience Proven experience in architectural design with a strong background in construction documentation, drafting, and project management. Extensive knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD) and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite. Hands-on experience with construction estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and regulatory compliance including building codes and accessibility standards. Effective negotiation skills with clients and contractors to facilitate smooth project execution while maintaining budgetary constraints. Familiarity with construction management practices including contracts administration, renovation projects, interior design integration, and construction accessibility regulations.
