Job Summary:

Operates construction, excavation, hauling and maintenance equipment including backhoes, track hoes loaders, bulldozers, excavators, grade tractors, asphalt rollers/spreaders and screeds. Uses equipment to prepare job sites for concrete/asphalt such as parking lots, driveways, sidewalks and roads. Monitors gauges or other indicators to ensure safe operation. Uses the screed to lay asphalt material to project specifications including but not limited to depth, width, and grade, when not operating the screed, performs laborer duties. Must be able to detect and correct defects in surfaces, seams and edges. Having a thorough understanding of various aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, mix designs, job specifications, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving. Perform all pre-start inspection and maintenance procedures. Operate paver, watch material flow from truck to hopper and direct truck operator as needed. Keep speed constant and adjust material flow as needed. Keep machine aligned and watch first several loads of mix carefully. Keep operation running as smoothly as possible. Clean machines as soon as paving is complete (DO

material to harden). Watch for signals from the other operators for changes in adjustment, material, or mat surface. Keep supplies on hand for paver. Performs pre-shift inspection of machinery in accordance with Company Guidelines and manufacturers specifications. Comply with operating safety rules and regulations. Able to read and understand grade stakes, blue tops, automated machine control. Asphalt compaction at a paving site. This extends to breakdown, intermediate and finish roller operators using any type of heavy compaction equipment. Knowledge of asphalt rolling patterns and best practices. Knowledge of compaction testing and temperature requirements. When not performing the above essential duties and responsibilities, may assist in other operations as designated by the supervisor. Think safety at all times and adheres to all safety rules, guidelines and codes. Wear PPE including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses, work gloves and high visibility vest. Must be able to work as a team player with a diverse group of people. Must be able to follow directions and complete daily tasks and expectations for each specific job site. Must be able to communicate problems to the job foreman. Must be able to work overtime and travel as required, with occasional overnight travel. Must report to work at designated start time. Must display a professional attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times. Must maintain constant alertness on job sites. 3 years experience is preferred. Must be able to physically operate heavy equipment. Lift and carry 5-25 lbs. frequently, 25-50 lbs. often, 50-100 lbs. occasionally, with assistance. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach and stand to operate equipment. Must have fine dexterity with both hands and ability to freely move arms. Must be able to do consistent physical effort including standing, shoveling, or walking for a minimum of 8 hours per day without fatiguing. Exposure to a variety of weather conditions at construction sites, including extreme heat and cold, rain, sleet or snow. The noise level can be loud. This position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and exposure to dust, concrete and asphalt. Must be 18 years of age or older, pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and consent to a pre-employment background check. Must take safety training as required.
