Job Description

McCowan Berrones & Co. LLC is seeking an experienced Lead Carpenter to join our team working on high-end custom residential projects throughout Marin County and the greater Bay Area. We are looking for a highly skilled, self-directed carpenter who can be given a set of plans, understand what needs to happen, develop a plan of action, and execute the work accurately and efficiently. This is a hands-on carpentry position for someone who knows how to figure things out and keep a job moving . The right person does not need someone standing over them or managing each step of their work. They can open up a jobsite, establish layout, organize the work, direct other carpenters when needed, and produce. What You'll Do Establish layout from plans and field conditions Lay out and frame walls, rough openings, doors, windows, and other structural elements from scratch Establish elevations and use lasers and other layout tools to verify header heights, floor elevations, openings, and critical dimensions Frame rough openings with a high degree of accuracy Understand framing assemblies, header requirements, elevations, dimensions, and construction sequencing Read and interpret architectural and structural plans efficiently and accurately Develop a plan of action before beginning work and execute it efficiently Identify field conflicts and determine practical solutions without requiring constant direction Coordinate and lead small crews of carpenters and laborers as needed Open and organize jobsites and get work underway independently Maintain the level of accuracy, organization, and craftsmanship expected in high-end residential construction Communicate clearly with project superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and other members of the field team Keep work moving while maintaining quality and attention to detail What We're Looking For This position is best suited for someone who is already operating beyond the level of a typical journeyman carpenter. You should be able to walk onto a project, review the plans, assess the conditions, determine what needs to happen, and get to work without needing to be managed through the process .
The ideal candidate:
Has extensive hands-on residential framing and carpentry experience Has experience working on high-end custom residential construction Is exceptionally proficient at reading architectural and structural plans Understands layout, elevations, dimensions, framing systems, and construction sequencing Can frame accurately from plans rather than relying on someone else to provide layout Is highly proficient with lasers, levels, measuring equipment, and layout tools Understands how to establish and verify consistent elevations throughout a project Can anticipate problems and solve field conditions independently Has strong spatial and mathematical skills Works efficiently without sacrificing accuracy or craftsmanship Can direct and coordinate the work of other carpenters when necessary Takes ownership of the work and follows it through to completion Is dependable, organized, productive, and comfortable working autonomously Compensation $45-$55 per hour , depending on experience, technical ability, and demonstrated level of responsibility.
