Public Works
  • Laborer Full Time, Non-Exempt Salary:
    $18.60
  • $24.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision of a crew leader, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light, medium and some heavy equipment. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to construction and maintenance of township roads and other township facilities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  • Operates single axle dump trucks, dual axle dump trucks with automatic and manual transmissions, loaders, roller and compactors, tractors, sprayers, sweepers, snowplows, salters, forklifts, road profilers, asphalt laydown machines, backhoes, grader.
  • Welding
  • Performs required manual labor in construction and maintenance projects; checks and services assigned equipment. Performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs,
  • May assist in loading and unloading of trucks, laying of pipe, using air tools and jackhammers, and other hand tools related to job.
  • Performs all aspects of asphalt lay down, including but not limited to, operation of laydown machine, rollers, distributor tank, road profilers.
  • Performs general landscape maintenance, mows grass on/along Township roadways and other Township property; cuts dead or diseased trees, removes stumps, trims tree branches, removes accumulated debris from roadways.
  • Have considerable knowledge of safety procedures and hazards related to construction, maintenance and equipment operation.
  • Familiar with blacktop techniques and capable of labor involved in placing material
  • Capable of sitting and standing for long periods of time
  • Familiar with and capable of installing storm sewer projects
  • Inspect and maintain sewage pump stations
  • Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Related Experience preferred
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License Preference will be given to anyone with a current Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must pass a criminal background check, drug test and motor vehicle check
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment operations and construction and maintenance procedures.
  • Welding
  • Ability to obtain a spray license
  • Skill in operation of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and general public.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including backhoe, loader, dump truck pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, manlift, tamper, plate compacter, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, chain saws, radio, phone, ditch witch, utility locating equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level is the work environment can be loud at times.
